Art History
UNDERGRADUATE MAJOR
An Art History major covers a wide range of art practices including: painting, sculpture and architecture as well as film, photography and design. You will focus on gaining a historical understanding of art in its social context, as well as learning tools for visual analysis and criticism. European art history from the early Renaissance to the late 20th and 21st century is covered, with a focus on English, French and Italian visual arts. The department offers specialisations in modern, post-modern and contemporary art from Australia, the USA, Western Europe, East and Southeast Asia. The study of Australian art includes indigenous painting and new media.
Study plan
To major in Art History, students must complete ARHT1001 Art and Experience and ARHT1002 Modern Times: Art and Film. You can then select from a full range of senior units of study available across the department. 36 senior credit points must be completed for the major.

Further study for major
Eligible candidates may proceed to an Honours year in the Bachelor of Arts, or apply for admission to a rich postgraduate program in the humanities and social sciences, comprising advanced learning and professional courses. Master degrees include capstone projects ranging from internships with government and non-government organisations in Australia and overseas, the gallery and museum sector, and leading media organisations, to opportunities for independent research projects which prepare students for higher degrees by research.
