The Graduate Certificate in Mental Health Nursing is designed for registered nurses working in mental health settings. This course focuses on current clinical issues in mental health, as well as therapeutic skills and role development. Students will learn how to deal with a range of conditions across the variety of health care environments in which clients present with mental illnesses, mental disorders and psychological distress and who are seeking specialist assessment and treatment. Students may choose to complete the graduate certificate, or use it as a pathway to the graduate diploma or master’s degree in this discipline.

The Graduate Certificate in Mental Health Nursing may be completed over one year part-time. Students will undertake two units of study in each semester. The course consists of 24 credit points of core units of study, which include three specialty-specific units for the mental health nursing courses.
Graduates of this course will be recognised as having advanced knowledge relevant to mental health nursing. Mental heath nurses are employed in acute inpatient settings, community mental health settings, specialist units, non-government organisations and independent practice.
Admission to the Graduate Certificate in Mental Health Nursing requires:
(a) a pre-registration nursing degree from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification; or
(b) a minimum of five years experience as a Registered Nurse. In addition to these requirements, admission to this course requires the applicant to be a registered nurse in Australia and satisfy the English language proficiency requirements. Applicants are required to be working primarily in the provision of care to people with mental health problems.

Indicative postgraduate student contribution amount
This student contribution amount for a Commonwealth Supported Place is an indication only of the fees that are payable by you in the calendar year you commence your course, commencing in 2014 for a standard annual full time load of 48 credit points (1.0 EFTSL). The exact student contribution that you pay will depend on the specific units of study in which you ultimately enrol. If you are a Commonwealth supported student and was enrolled in a University course before 1 January 2013 your student contribution may differ.
Annual review for postgraduate student contribution amount
Importantly, student contribution amounts are subject to annual review by the University, and are likely to increase each year of your period of study (subject to a Commonwealth specified cap), effective at the start of each calendar year.
Postgraduate Domestic Tuition Fee
This 2014, tuition fee for a domestic postgraduate student represents the fee that is payable by you in the calendar year you commence your course, commencing in 2013 for a standard annual full time load of 48 credit points (1.0 EFTSL). If your study load is more or less than the 1.0 EFTSL your fee will differ.

Additional incidental fees
