Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies (Research Methodology)

The Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies is designed to develop and support the careers of trained teachers who are teaching professionals, educational administrators, researchers and policymakers.
The research methodology specialisation provides a broad introduction to the world of research and is the foundation for a career in education research and related fields. Although this course focuses specifically on methods applied in the discipline of education, it constitutes a basis for a career in any area of social research. By developing your research skills, it also provides a strong foundation for research higher degrees. Classes encourage collaborative approaches to learning, and involve the exploration of topics using real-life examples of research. Hands-on experience in data collection and analysis is a feature of the specialisation.
Subject to meeting progression requirements in the graduate diploma, you may apply to transfer to the Master of Education.

Study plan
Candidates complete a total of 36 credit points (cp) (6 units of study). Candidates undertaking the Graduate Diploma of Educational Studies without a specialisation are required to undertake 12cp of core units from one specialisation and 24cp from the program units of study table. Candidates undertaking a specialisation are required to complete the required core and elective units listed in the relevant specialisation units of study table.
Graduate opportunities
The Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies has been designed to further the careers of teaching professionals, educational administrators, researchers and policymakers within specific areas of education practice. Graduates will have the skills and knowledge to further their careers as teaching professionals, educational administrators, researchers and policymakers within specific areas of education practice. Students who complete the health professional education specialisation will gain knowledge and skills to meet the changing global environment of health professional education. Those students who hold teaching qualifications and complete eight units of study from the special education specialisation will be recognised by the NSW Department of Education and Training as a formal qualification in Special Education.
Admission
Admission requirements
A successful applicant for general admission to the Graduate Diploma in Educational Studies will hold a Bachelor of Education; a Bachelor degree, or an equivalent qualification, with the completion of postgraduate studies, or professional experience equivalent to one year full-time, in a field appropriate to the program of studies; or have satisfactorily completed the Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies at the University of Sydney in the specialisation intended. For admission into the specialisation of coach education an applicant may alternatively hold the Level 2 National Coaching Accreditation Scheme certificate or equivalent and a minimum of three years’ coaching/sporting experience at an elite level. For admission into the TESOL specialisation, an applicant must also have a second or foreign language teaching qualification or at least one year’s full-time second or foreign language-teaching experience.

Applications are made directly to the University and assessed by the Faculty. On-time applications for the March Semester close on the last working day of November. On-time applications for the July Semester close on the last working day in June. Please note: not all courses are offered in the July semester intake.
International students

Postgraduate Domestic Tuition Fee
This 2013, tuition fee for a domestic postgraduate student represents the fee that is payable by you in the calendar year you commence your course, commencing in 2012 for a standard annual full time load of 48 credit points (1.0 EFTSL). If your study load is more or less than the 1.0 EFTSL your fee will differ.

Additional incidental fees
For some courses there are incidental fees additional to the student contribution and/or course fee.
