Graduate Diploma in Environmental Science

The Graduate Diploma in Environmental Science draws on a wide range of science-based disciplines and applications, from ecology to solar power, analytical chemistry to geomorphology. If you are a recent graduate wishing to obtain employment in the environmental field, or if you are already working and are interested in gaining either a formal qualification in environmental science or additional information about related areas of environmental science, then this course is suitable for you.

Subject to meeting progression requirements, you may choose to transfer to the Master of Science in Environmental Science from the graduate diploma.

Students follow the study pattern of the core units of study and electives as required. You may undertake the course on a full time or part time basis. You will complete a total of 48 credit points (cp) of study for the award comprising: 24cp of core units of study and 24cp of elective units of study. Please note however, that due to the nature of timetabling, the timetables of units from other programs may clash with the units of this course, and it is your responsibility to plan your course of study carefully.

Environmental scientists work as analytical scientists and environmental indicator monitors to policy-makers and environmental or catchment managers. Within Australia, our graduates have acquired jobs in federal, state and local government bodies including State Forests NSW, the Roads and Transport Authority, and the National Parks and Wildlife Service, as well as with private consultancies.

Admission requirements

Although you do not specifically need to hold a bachelor’s degree in environmental science to apply, you should hold either a bachelor of science degree, or a similar tertiary qualification, where there is an emphasis on one of the following disciplines: biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, ecology, climate and atmospheric sciences, marine science, geology, geography, environmental studies, environmental engineering, agriculture and/or natural resource management. Alternatively, a bachelor’s degree in any discipline, in addition to successfully completing 3 units of undergraduate science (biology, chemistry, geography) at the University of Sydney with a pass average.
