Progression rules

Under normal progression, a student shall undertake and successfully complete all units of study up to the value of 24 credit points per semester as prescribed for the course. Students are required to attend all lectures, tutorials and other activities prescribed for their units of study.

Graduate opportunities

The Graduate Diploma in Psychology fully meets accreditation requirements of the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) as an undergraduate major sequence of study in psychology. The GDP provides a pathway to a fourth year of study in psychology and for meeting the requirements for provisional registration as a psychologist in Australia.

Full registration as a professional psychologist in Australia is overseen by the Psychology Board of Australia and also requires a fifth and sixth year of graduate study in professional psychology; or one year of graduate study in professional psychology plus one year of a Board approved internship; or two years of a Board approved internship.

Further study

After successfully completing the GDP, you may apply a fourth year of study in Psychology 4 (Honours) and then the Doctorate of Clinical Psychology (DCP), or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). You may also wish to undertake a non-professional course in psychology such as the Sydney Master of Science in Health Psychology or the Sydney Master of Science in Coaching Psychology.

Admission requirements

Please note this course is not available to international students.

Admission for domestic students to the course requires:

(a) a Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Political, Economic and Social Sciences, Bachelor of Arts and Sciences, or Bachelor of Liberal Arts and Science from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification, provided the applicant has not previously completed a major in psychology; and
(b) completion of 12 credit points of junior units of study in psychology (eg. Psychology 1001 and Psychology 1002) or equivalent within the last ten years.

Please note that you are required to submit evidence (eg. academic transcript and unit/subject descriptions) of completion of Psychology 1001 and 1002 or equivalent with your application. You can complete PSYC1001 and PSYC1002 at Sydney as a non-degree student either in the regular semester or in Summer School.

Please note that you are required to submit evidence (eg. academic transcript and unit/subject descriptions) of completion of Psychology 1001 and 1002 or equivalent with your application. You will need to scan, upload and attach your supporting documentation to your online application. You will be able to save your application and finish completing it at a later date. Applications are made directly to the University and assessed by the Faculty of Science.

Postgraduate Domestic Tuition Fee

This 2013, tuition fee for a domestic postgraduate student represents the fee that is payable by you in the calendar year you commence your course, commencing in 2012 for a standard annual full time load of 48 credit points (1.0 EFTSL). If your study load is more or less than the 1.0 EFTSL your fee will differ.

Additional incidental fees
