Animal Reproduction

POSTGRADUATE SPECIALISATION

You will develop an in-depth understanding of animal reproductive biology, with an emphasis on livestock and domestic animals. Core and elective units of study in animal reproduction deal with reproductive cycles, sexual differentiation, fertilization, embryo development, gestation and parturition. You will understand applications of advanced reproductive technologies with practical instruction given on semen collection and processing, manipulation of the reproductive cycle, artificial insemination, and pregnancy diagnosis. Animal reproduction also covers advanced applications of biotechnology to animal productivity, disease control, the development of new products from animals and the impact of altered micro-organisms and plants on animals, molecular biology and recombinant DNA technology.

Study plan

A candidate specialising in animal reproduction completes 12 credit points (cp) of core units and 36cp of units which may include up to 24cp of research units of study listed for this stream.

Completing the Master of Animal Science with the Animal Reproduction stream at University of Sydney provides an excellent path for graduates to pursue careers in animal science, research and a range of animal industries. Employment opportunities are available in diverse locations with production animals, companion animals and wildlife.
Career opportunities may include careers in genetics/biotechnology: medical research, native animal genomics, molecular biology (animal and human), genetics and biotechnology companies and assisted reproductive technologies (artificial breeding and IVF).
