Our entire visual experience depends on light. It has a profound impact on both the function and aesthetics of architectural spaces. The Illumination Design program offers strong technical education in human visual perception, methods for quantifying light, lighting technologies and issues of sustainability. This field is enjoying rapid and exciting technological innovations and this program emphasizes the knowledge and critical thinking skills to enable students to adapt to - and even lead - future changes.
As a student of Illumination Design, you will develop your expertise in lighting for architectural and urban environments. You will understand how rapidly-evolving sustainable lighting technologies are changing industry practise and are contributing to new opportunities for creative applications of modern materials, colours and technologies.
You will understand the relationship between lighting and allied-built environment disciplines and how the interaction of optics, psychology and physiology determines an occupant’s perception and appreciation of lighting choices.
This program prepares you for a range of lighting and illumination-related careers. Employment spans diverse disciplines such as architectural lighting, lighting consultancy, technical advising and lighting product design.
Graduates of this course are working at lighting design firms, engineering companies, lighting equipment manufacturers, architectural and design practices, lighting distributors, and as private consultants. Upon successful completion of this masters coursework program, students are qualified for full membership in the Illuminating Engineering Society of Australia and New Zealand, subject to the required practical experience.

Candidates for the Master of Design Science (Illumination Design) complete 72 credit points (cp) made up of at least five core units of study (36cp) including one 12cp design unit, three optional units (18cp) from within the course, and three elective units (18cp) offered by the faculty, subject to meeting prior learning requirements and timetabling.
Progression rules
The Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning will monitor students for satisfactory progress towards the completion of their award course. In addition to the common triggers used to identify students not meeting academic progression requirements, students must pass any unit of study identified in the course resolutions as being critical to progression through the course.

The Master of Design Science (Illumination Design) will prepare you to work as an independent lighting designer or lighting specialist, or to work with electrical products manufacturing, lighting management services or an energy services company.
Course accreditation
Successful completion of the Master of Design Science (Illumination Design) will qualify you for full membership of the Illuminating Engineering Society of Australia and New Zealand, subject
to the required practical experience.
Further study
The Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning places a high emphasis on its research activity. We have a vibrantly diverse community of scholars and practitioners, many of whom have taken national and international leadership roles in their fields. The faculty offers the opportunity to pursue research degrees, both MPhil and PhD in four disciplines: architecture and allied arts; architectural and design science; design lab; and urban and regional planning and policy.
You may elect to study in any of these fields, or to pursue interdisciplinary studies in a combination of fields with the faculty or between the faculty and elsewhere in the University. The University and the faculty have formal links, including exchange agreements and memoranda of understanding, with institutions throughout Asia, Europe, Scandinavia and North America. These translate into research opportunities for students as well as staff.
These degrees are supported through a wide range of resources, including extensively equipped laboratories and comprehensive workshop facilities.
Other study options
The Faculty of Architecture, Design & Planning runs continuing professional development short courses, including an online program, which provide a valuable opportunity for professionals to update their knowledge to enhance career pathways or for personal interest. All of our courses qualify for CPD points with AIA, SBSE/EA and AIRAH members.
If you are considering further study it is also an opportunity to try a subject from a course to gauge its suitability. You have the choice to either complete the assessment work or not. If you do successfully complete the assessment work you will be eligible to receive 6 credit points per subject towards a future degree. Admission
Admission requirements
A successful applicant for admission to the Master of Design Science (Illumination Design) will have a bachelor's degree. This program runs on a 2-year cycle, the next cycle starts in 2013. Local students enrolling in the Design Science (Illumination Design) can, with permission, enrol part time in 2012. There is no enrolment for international students in 2012 in the Design Science (Illumination Design) program. Both local and international students enrolling in the Design Science (Illumination Design Double Stream) can enrol full time in 2012.
This program can also be taken as double stream Master degree in combination with another Design Science Program. To undertake a double degree, the core units from the secondary degree are taken as the electives in the primary degree. Please see the Faculty Handbook for enrolment advice for secondary stream structure.
Individual units can also be taken as Continuing Professional Development short courses without enrolling into a degree.

Many Design Science units are taught as ‘block-mode’ intensive classes, delivered over four to six full days, of which some fall on weekends to accommodate full-time working students. Some units however may be delivered in weekly lecture format.

Students may apply to upgrade at the completion of their program from the Graduate Certificate, through to the Diploma and then to the Masters by maintaining a credit average over the course of study.
Masters and Diploma students may also opt to graduate with a lower level of certification once the required units are complete.

If your study load is more or less than the 1.0 EFTSL your fee will differ.

In addition to the fees indicated here for the course of study, International Students studying on an Australian Student Visa must have appropriate health insurance for the duration of their studies on a Student Visa through an approved provider of the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) scheme.
