POSTGRADUATE SPECIALISATION

The MTeach specialisation in secondary education requires candidates to choose to study either two single method curriculum areas (teaching methods) or one double method curriculum area. In science, students can qualify to teach in one science area (single method) or in two science areas (double method) from those on offer.


Assumed knowledge

Applicants for enrolment in the MTeach specialising in secondary education must hold a bachelor degree that satisfies the NSW Institute of Teachers requirements for accreditation. Candidates with a first teaching method of science must have completed:
(1) biology: 3-year sequence (6 units of study) in science, with at least 4 units at level 2 or above. Studies must include 4 units in biology and 2 units in either chemistry or physics.
(2) chemistry: 3-year sequence (6 units) in science, with at least 4 units at level 2 or above. Studies must include 4 units in chemistry and 2 units in one of physics, biology, or earth and environmental science.
(3) earth and environmental science: 3-year sequence (6 units) in science, with at least 4 units at level 2 or above. Studies must include all of the following:
biology (6cp); geology or environmental science (6cp); chemistry or physics (12cp);
other science (12cp).
(4) physics: 3-year sequence (6 units) in science, with at least 4 units at level 2 or above). Studies must include 4 units in physics and 2 units in one of biology, chemistry, or earth and environmental science.

Study plan

To meet the requirements for this specialisation, a candidate completes 96 credit points (cp) comprising
(a) Year 1: 48 cp of study from the MTeach table including 20cp of core education units and 28cp of curriculum and professional studies units; and
(b) Year 2: 48cp of units of study from the MTeach table including 34cp of core education units and 14cp of curriculum and professional studies units.
Subject to the satisfactory completion of 72cp (normally at the end of the third full-time semester), students undertake extensive work in our partner schools in the final semester of the course.

Capstone specialisation

Students undertake their internship of at least 40 days (usually 45 days) in a secondary school in the second semester in the second year of the program. Internship placements are approved by the Faculty, and students undertake their placements in the curriculum area(s) in which they are enrolled and are conditionally certified to teach.

During the internship students are assigned to one or more mentor teachers, usually in a single discipline area and are responsible for teaching one or more classes for a total of between 14 and 17 lesson periods per week. The mentor teacher monitors the intern in their work in the school and, in discussion with the tertiary mentor, is responsible for writing a report on the internship that forms the basis of the assessment. Assessment is aligned with the NSW Institute of Teacher's Professional Teaching Standards for the Graduate Teacher.

Graduate opportunities

The MTeach in secondary education specialising in science qualifies graduates for work in Australian secondary schools, where graduates may find employment as classroom teachers, as well as in various levels of educational management within the school, including student welfare, curriculum development, year adviser, faculty master, principal and assistant principal. Secondary school teachers usually specialise in two subject areas, although some areas involve specialisation either in that area alone, or in conjunction with another area.
