As a chemical and biomolecular engineering student, you will learn from leading professionals and researchers as you develop a sophisticated knowledge of chemical, combustion, environmental, petroleum and water engineering. You will understand how to transform raw materials into beneficial products using chemistry, biology and physics. Throughout your studies you will also discover the emerging fields of nanotechnology and molecular biology, which are revolutionising energy and storage systems, food production and the healthcare industry.



During your four-year degree you will explore the challenges faced by process industries, including the chemicals, minerals, energy and agriculture, food, beverage and pharmaceutical sectors. Through practical learning, industry projects and specialised electives you will become an agent in the drive to create a sustainable society. A 12-week internship will give you invaluable professional experience, to complement your comprehensive knowledge. An embedded honours thesis enables you to design your own research project in a field of your choice.

Study Plan

The Bachelor of Engineering Honours (Chemical and Biomolecular) is undertaken full-time over four years. Students enrol in junior units of study with a maximum 48 credit points during first year. A typical unit of study has a value of 6 credit points. First to fourth year students complete core units of study within the degree with some electives available in the fourth year to provide more specialised study at a senior level. Students undertake an Honours thesis or engineering project in fourth year.

Majors

What is a major?

There are over 15 engineering majors to choose from.

Depending on your engineering stream, some majors may require additional study. Certain majors may also have limited capacity.

There is no requirement to complete a major. A major requires the completion of 24 credit points chosen from units of study listed in the table for that major; satisfying any additional requirements specified for the major; and the completion of a thesis project that is deemed relevant to the topic of the major.

Progression rules

The Faculty of Engineering and Information Technologies will monitor students for satisfactory progress towards the completion of the Bachelor of Engineering. For satisfactory progress, students must pass any unit of study deemed critical to progression through the course.

What is an elective?

An elective is a unit of study within a degree, usually an option within a course. Electives allow more detailed study of a particular subject and are often recommended within an engineering stream, as they are directly related to, or build a more comprehensive understanding of content taught in, core units of study within that stream. Each stream will also list acceptable alternative units of study, and free electives, providing a flexible study plan.

Course opportunities

The course includes a mandatory 10-12 week practical/industrial placement, plant and site visits, and opportunities for the development of significant professional relationships with industry partners.

The course also offers one-year exchange programs with universities in Europe, Asia and North America.

Engineers working in this field may specialise as combustion engineers, petroleum engineers, chemical engineers, smelting engineers, water treatment engineers or environmental engineers. There is also scope for chemical and biomolecular engineers to move into related areas including biotechnology, food engineering and mineral engineering.

The faculty provides a link between postgraduate students in the different Engineering disciplines, and offers a welcoming and supportive environment in which to undertake challenging coursework programs and research. The faculty's postgraduate coursework and research are focused on industrial applications supported by strong fundamental research programs run by internationally recognised academics.

About honours

This is an Honours degree. To qualify for the award of the Bachelor of Engineering Honours (Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering) Degree, a candidate must successfully complete 192 credit points; which is made up of varying units from the Engineering Core Table, the Engineering Stream Core Table and the Engineering Stream Specialist Table. The candidate must also have an EWAM (Engineering Weighted Average Mark) of at least 65 immediately prior to the semester in which a thesis unit of study is first attempted; and have an EIHWAM (Engineering Integrated Honours Weighted Average Mark) of at least 65 at the completion of the degree. The candidate must complete the requirements within a time limit of 5 years. If a candidate passes the program but does not meet the requirements as listed above, then the candidate will graduate with a Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering).

Cross-Institutional Study –
Provided permission has been obtained in advance, the Dean (or Delegate) may permit a student to complete a unit of study at another institution and have that unit credited to the student's course requirements, provided that:
(a) the resolutions of the student's course of enrolment do not specifically exclude cross-institutional study; and either;
(b) the unit of study content is not taught in any corresponding unit of study at the University; or
(c) the student is unable, for good reason, to attend a corresponding unit of study at the University

International Exchange –
The Faculty encourages students to participate in international exchange programs, except where specified otherwise in the resolutions for a particular course. Students must apply to the Head of the relevant School of Engineering and Information Technologies to obtain approval for their planned enrolment while on exchange. This guarantees that the units completed externally will be correctly matched to the core requirements of their Course.

Admission requirements

Admission to this course is on the basis of a secondary school leaving qualification such as the NSW Higher School Certificate (including national and international equivalents), tertiary study or an approved preparation program. English language requirements must be met where these are not demonstrated by sufficient qualifications taught in English.

Assumed knowledge

HSC Mathematics Extension 1 and Chemistry. If you attempt engineering without this prior level of knowledge of Mathematics you may experience difficulty, so you are strongly advised to undertake an appropriate bridging course.
