This combined degree emphasises the strong scientific foundations of engineering. It will expand your career options by giving you two qualifications with just one extra year of study.

 

You can combine any engineering stream ( Aeronautical , Biomedical , Chemical and Biomolecular , Civil , Electrical , Mechanical , Mechatronic , and Software ) with a Bachelor of Science (Medical Science). You will gain technical expertise alongside analytical and research skills to lead innovation across continually evolving industries. In addition to your engineering stream, you will also gain foundational knowledge and research skills in medical science, biomedicine and bioinformatics.

Complementing your engineering studies, the Bachelor of Science (Medical Science) provides an essential foundation in the structure and function of the human body, from molecules through to whole systems. Core units will ensure you develop a breadth of knowledge across fields such as anatomy, cellular and molecular biochemistry, human physiology, immunobiology, infectious diseases, pharmacology and microbiology, and you will have the opportunity to specialise in senior units.

Units of Study

Assumed knowledge

Mathematics or HSC Mathematics Extension 1, Chemistry and either Physics or Biology. Other assumed knowledge depends on the science programs or areas studied.

Admission requirement

Admission to this course is on the basis of a secondary school leaving qualification such as the NSW Higher School Certificate (including national and international equivalents), tertiary study or an approved preparation program. English language requirements must be met where these are not demonstrated by sufficient qualifications taught in English.

Course opportunities

All streams of the Bachelor of Engineering Honours include mandatory completion of the Professional Engagement Program (PEP). The program requires completion of 600 hours of professional engagement experiences integrated continuously throughout the degree. The program is designed to allow students to contextualise their learning, enhance their own professional development, and build the foundations of a strong professional engineering career.

The Bachelor of Engineering Honours and the Bachelor of Science (Medical Science) both offer one-year exchange programs around the world.

Professional accreditation

Sydney engineering degrees are accredited by Engineers Australia www.engineersaustralia.org.au and by other major professional engineering institutions. Our graduates are recognised internationally through the Washington Accord of the International Engineering Alliance www.washingtonaccord.org Depending upon the major or majors undertaken within the Bachelor of Science (Medical Science), the degree offers professional recognition by a range of government and non-government organisations. Future study options

After completing the Bachelor of Engineering, further study is available via research or coursework. The faculty provides a link between postgraduate students in the different Engineering disciplines, and offers a welcoming and supportive environment in which to undertake challenging coursework programs and research. The faculty's postgraduate coursework and research are focused on industrial applications supported by strong fundamental research programs run by internationally recognised academics. Following completion of the Bachelor of Science (Medical Science) eligible candidates may proceed to an additional honours year, or to the Graduate Diploma in Science in some areas of study, as pathways to higher degrees by research in the sciences at Sydney. The BSc also provides for admission to a range of Sydney postgraduate and graduate entry coursework programs.

Graduate opportunities

Our engineering graduates can be found in a broad range of careers and roles, including all branches of engineering such as civil, chemical, mechanical, mechatronic, biomolecular and space. They work in robotics, transport and logistics, agribusiness and renewable energy; in building design, construction, communications, medical device manufacturing and disaster recovery. Our medical science graduates can also be found in a diverse range of careers and roles, including: medical researcher, pathologist, doctor (with further study), dentist (with further study), histologist, physiologist, microbiologist, biochemist, biomedical device designer. Science graduates from the University of Sydney have distinguished themselves in many areas of endeavour. Indicative Undergraduate Student Contribution Amount


The student contribution amount for a Commonwealth Supported Place is an indication only of the amount payable in Year 1 for a standard full time load of 48 credit points (1.0 EFTSL). The exact student contribution that you pay will depend on the calendar year in which you undertake your study in the course, and the specific units of study in which you enrol. Annual review and fee increases


Importantly, student contribution amounts are subject to annual review by the University, and will increase each year of your period of study (subject to a Commonwealth specified cap), effective at the start of each calendar year.

Additional incidental costs


For some courses there are incidental costs additional to the student contribution. Some of these incidental costs are significant, for example, course-specific materials, tools, protected clothing, and equipment. International students

Indicative International Tuition Fees for Undergraduate Students


The tuition fee for international undergraduate students is an indication of the fees payable in Year 1 for a standard full time load of 48 credit points (1.0 EFTSL). Depending on the calendar year in which you undertake your study, and if your study load is more or less than the 1.0 EFTSL, your tuition fee will differ from the indicative amount. Combined undergraduate degree tuition fees


For international students, for combined undergraduate degrees, a single indicative course tuition fee applies for the duration of your study in the combined degree, regardless of the units of study that are undertaken as part of your combined degree. Importantly, the single indicative course tuition fee is subject to annual review, and will increase each year of your study in the combined degree.
