What you’ll study

Unit of study table: Medicine

The Doctor of Medicine is a postgraduate coursework degree that will provide you with clinical and research training to develop the skills needed to be responsive to the health needs of individuals, families and communities and committed to improving the health care system at all levels. Graduates from this program are eligible for provisional registration with the Medical Board of Australia as a medical practitioner.

Over four years you will complete core units according to a prescribed course of study, covering eight vertical themes:

  • basic and clinical sciences
  • clinical skills
  • diagnostics and therapy
  • research, evidence and informatics
  • population health
  • indigenous health
  • ethics and law
  • professionalism and interprofessional teamwork

You will also complete a minimum of 2,310 hours of professional placements, and a research project in your third year.

Quota

The intake for the Doctor of Medicine is usually around 300 students each year. About three quarters are in Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP) (for domestic students only). These include Bonded Medical Program (BMP) places, which have specific conditions.  

There are usually up to 70 full-fee-paying places available for international students in the Metropolitan Stream.

The 24 student places in the Dubbo Stream are only available to students eligible for a Commonwealth Supported Place.

Domestic applicants are required to number their preferences (e.g. CSP, BMP) when they complete the confirmation page.

Domestic applicants

There are three separate components to making an application for admission to the Doctor of Medicine:

  1. Submit an online QAS application to the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) within the designated period;
  2. Submit an online MD application directly to the University with complete supporting documents; and
  3. If applicable, complete an online confirmation page (refer to the Domestic Admissions Guide).

NOTE:

  1. Late applications will not be considered.
  2. Click on the orange 'Apply' button to submit an online application to the MD. On the last page of the online application form you will be asked to select the stream/s for which you wish to be considered – the Metropolitan (Sydney) stream and/or the Dubbo stream.

International applicants

There are two ways to submit an international application:

  1. Submit an online MD application directly to the University with complete supporting documents by the deadline; OR
  2. Submit an application, with complete supporting documents, through a University representative (agent). Agents must submit ONLINE applications with complete supporting documents to the University by the deadline.

NOTE:

Late applications will not be considered. If you intend to submit an application through an agent, it is your responsibility to ensure that your agent will complete the required application procedure by the deadline.

International application opening and closing dates

Applications close 19 June 2025 at 10am

Applications for the MD will not be processed if an applicant fails to complete one or more of these components.

This course has limited places available. Not all applicants who meet the application deadline and requirements may be successful.
