Other study options: non-degree and non-award study

What is non-degree study?

Non-degree study allows you to undertake undergraduate‑level or select postgraduate-level units of study for professional development or personal interest without enrolling in a full award course. You won’t earn credit points towards a degree, but you’ll receive an official transcript outlining the units you complete.

What is a non-award course?

A non-award course is a course of study that does not lead to a University of Sydney qualification. It may include one or more units of study, but is not taken for the purpose of earning a degree. Non-award courses include professional development programs.

What is a non-award student?

A non-award student is someone who is enrolled in individual units that do not contribute to a University of Sydney award course. All non-degree study is completed on a non-award basis.

What can you study?

Non-degree study options

You can apply for a wide range of undergraduate units and selected postgraduate units. Availability varies each year and not all units listed in handbooks are offered every session.

Study Abroad and Exchange

You can combine study and travel in Sydney, with credits to count towards your degree in your home country. Come to the University of Sydney as an exchange student from a partner university or enrol with us directly. Learn more.

You can apply for our Study Abroad Program for undergraduate, postgraduate coursework and postgraduate research levels of study.

Cross-institutional Study

During your studies, you may be able to complete a unit of study at another Australian institution and have it credited towards your degree. This is called outbound cross-institutional study. Learn more.

Non-University of Sydney students (inbound cross-institutional study)

If you are enrolled as a student at another Australian institution, you can apply to study a subject or subjects at the University of Sydney - see below.

Fees

Non-degree students pay full tuition fees for each unit. Fees are calculated based on the standard full-time tuition rate for the year you study.
