International Business


Studying an International Business major at Sydney will provide you with the knowledge and skills relevant to the development, strategy and management of international business organisations and the institutional context for their development, growth and operation. There will be a strong emphasis throughout the units of study on cultural understanding and comparing how business works in Australia with other countries in the Asian region and beyond. In addition, there is the opportunity to focus on entrepreneurship skills in an international business context.

Study plan

For a major in International Business students must complete:
(i) one junior unit of study (six credit points), that must be offered by the University of Sydney Business School; or that is part of either the Bachelor of Economics or the Bachelor of International and Global Studies (for students enrolled in these degrees only);
(ii) four compulsory senior units of study:
- International Business Strategy
- Cross-Cultural Management
- International Business Alliances
- International Risk Management.
(iii) a minimum of two senior International Business elective units of study (12 credit points) selected from the available elective options listed in the University of Sydney Business School handbook..

Graduate opportunities

Graduates with a major in International Business will have strong career opportunities with multinational companies, government agencies, international aid agencies, other non-governmental agencies, and companies with global business links. Some roles include: export and import manager, manager of international strategy, government officer - Department of Foreign and Trade Affairs, manager of country of regional operations, international management consultant, international travel manager, international hotel manager, consultant: United Nations, intentional business analyst.

Further study for major

Eligible candidates may proceed to an honours year in the Bachelor of Commerce or the Bachelor of Commerce (Liberal Studies); or apply for admission to postgraduate study in the Business School.
