Our entire visual experience depends on light. It has a profound impact on both the function and aesthetics of architectural spaces. The Illumination Design program offers strong technical education in human visual perception, methods for quantifying light, lighting technologies and issues of sustainability. This field is enjoying rapid and exciting technological innovations and this program emphasizes the knowledge and critical thinking skills to enable students to adapt to - and even lead - future changes.
As a student of Illumination Design, you will develop your expertise in lighting for architectural and urban environments. You will understand how rapidly-evolving sustainable lighting technologies are changing industry practise and are contributing to new opportunities for creative applications of modern materials, colours and technologies.
You will understand the relationship between lighting and allied-built environment disciplines and how the interaction of optics, psychology and physiology determines an occupant’s perception and appreciation of lighting choices.
This program prepares you for a range of lighting and illumination-related careers. Employment spans diverse disciplines such as architectural lighting, lighting consultancy, technical advising and lighting product design.

Study plan
Candidates for the Graduate Certificate in Design Science (Illumination Design) complete 24 credit points (cp) of core units of study, subject to meeting prior learning requirements and timetabling.
Graduate opportunities
The Graduate Diploma in Design Science (Illumination Design) will prepare you to work as an independent lighting designer or lighting specialist, or to work with electrical products manufacturing, lighting management services or an energy services company.
Admission
Admission requirements
A successful applicant for admission to the Graduate Certificate in Design Science will have a bachelor's degree or possess experience which is considered to demonstrate the knowledge and aptitude required to undertake the course.
This program can be taken with a secondary stream in combination with another Design Science Program. To undertake a double degree, the core units from the secondary degree are generally taken as the electives in the primary degree.

Many Design Science units are taught as ‘block-mode’ intensive classes, delivered over four to six full days, of which some fall on weekends to accommodate full-time working students. Some units however may be delivered in weekly lecture format.

Students may apply to upgrade at the completion of their program from the Graduate Certificate, through to the Diploma and then to the Masters by maintaining a credit average over the course of study.
Masters and Diploma students may also opt to graduate with a lower level of certification once the required units are complete.
Please note that students may commence studies in Semester 2, however some courses are only available in part-time capacity due to the units on offer.

Postgraduate Domestic Tuition Fee
This 2013, tuition fee for a domestic postgraduate student represents the fee that is payable by you in the calendar year you commence your course, commencing in 2012 for a standard annual full time load of 48 credit points (1.0 EFTSL). If your study load is more or less than the 1.0 EFTSL your fee will differ.

Additional incidental fees
For some courses there are incidental fees additional to the student contribution and/or course fee.
