Bachelor of Education (Secondary:Aboriginal Studies)

The Bachelor of Education (Secondary: Aboriginal Studies) is a four-year degree that will provide you with a secondary teaching qualification, majoring in Aboriginal Studies and HSIE. You will study key elements of Australian Indigenous history, achieve an understanding of land from an Indigenous cultural perspective, learn about teaching Aboriginal languages and reading Aboriginal writing, and gain a knowledge of contemporary issues in Indigenous rights. The Bachelor of Education (Secondary: Aboriginal Studies) will give you the skills and understanding necessary to implement current NSW Board of Studies syllabuses in Human Society and its Environment and introduce you, as a future teacher, to issues relating to the education of students with special needs.

Study plan

The course is delivered by block mode. In block-mode (away-from-base) courses, students attend three week-long sessions each semester (six blocks per year) on campus at the Koori Centre, and the remainder of the course is completed independently at home. The Bachelor of Education (Secondary: Aboriginal Studies) requires the satisfactory completion of 192 credit points, and includes substantial periods of integrated in-school teaching experience.

The Master of Indigenous Languages Education is a one-year award course in the areas of linguistics and languages education. There is no language proficiency requirement for admission to the course or the award of the degree.

Admission to candidature is by completion of the Diploma in Education (Aboriginal) or equivalent qualification.

As this program is specifically for Indigenous Australians, applicants are required to provide confirmation that they are of Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent. This confirmation can be in the form of a letter of identity from your local Aboriginal Land Council, Aboriginal Legal Service, Aboriginal Medical Service, or other official Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander organisation. If you cannot provide a letter from any of these organisations you will need to provide a statutory declaration confirming your Aboriginality. You will need to provide your confirmation document with your application.

Indicative Undergraduate Student Contribution Amount

This student contribution amount for a Commonwealth Supported Place is an indication only of the fees that are payable by you in the calendar year you commence your course, commencing in 2013 for a standard annual full time load of 48 credit points (1.0 EFTSL). The exact student contribution that you pay will depend on the specific units of study in which you ultimately enrol. If you are a Commonwealth supported student and was enrolled in a University course before 1 January 2012 your student contribution may differ.

Annual review

Importantly, student contribution amounts are subject to annual review by the University, and are likely to increase each year of your period of study (subject to a Commonwealth specified cap), effective at the start of each calendar year.

Additional incidental fees
