Study plan

The course is delivered by block mode. In block-mode (away-from-base) courses, students attend three week-long sessions each semester (six blocks per year) on campus at the Koori Centre, and the remainder of the course is completed independently at home.

Further study

A student who completes the requirements for the Diploma in Education (Aboriginal) and who does not graduate with this award, may, with the permission of the Dean of the Faculty of Education and Social Work, enrol in the degree of Bachelor of Education (Secondary: Aboriginal Studies) with credit for all the units of study completed toward the Diploma in Education (Aboriginal).

Admission requirements

Admission to candidature for the diploma may be granted to an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person who (a) holds qualifications acceptable to the Board of Studies in Indigenous Studies or (b) satisfies admission requirements by submitting an application then successfully completing the Koori Centre written assessment test and interview process. As this program is specifically for Indigenous Australians, applicants are required to provide confirmation that they are of Australian Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent. This confirmation can be in the form of a letter of identity from your local Aboriginal Land Council, Aboriginal Legal Service, Aboriginal Medical Service, or other official Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander organisation. If you cannot provide a letter from any of these organisations you will need to provide a statutory declaration confirming your Aboriginality. You will need to provide your confirmation document with your application.

Applications for this course are made directly to the Koori Centre. Information can be obtained from the Koori Centre and applications close on the last working day of October. Application forms can be mailed out to you or found online.

Indicative Undergraduate Student Contribution Amount

This student contribution amount for a Commonwealth Supported Place is an indication only of the fees that are payable by you in the calendar year you commence your course, commencing in 2013 for a standard annual full time load of 48 credit points (1.0 EFTSL). The exact student contribution that you pay will depend on the specific units of study in which you ultimately enrol. If you are a Commonwealth supported student and was enrolled in a University course before 1 January 2012 your student contribution may differ.

Annual review

Importantly, student contribution amounts are subject to annual review by the University, and are likely to increase each year of your period of study (subject to a Commonwealth specified cap), effective at the start of each calendar year.
