Study plan

The Graduate Diploma in International Public Health consists of 36 credit points (cp), including at least four core units (24cp) and 12cp of elective units of study. As part of the 12cp of elective units, 6cp must be selected from the International Public Health table of units of study (please see the School of Public Health website). You will have an opportunity to undertake a 12cp research dissertation as an elective unit provided you have achieved a minimum weighted average mark of 70 per cent in at least 24cp of coursework and obtained approval from the course coordinator.

In general, core units are completed in semester one of each year and electives are completed in semester two of each year. Teaching methods involve structured and problem-oriented learning. Structured learning is achieved through direct teaching and self-instructional material such as course notes, computer exercises and reading lists. Group learning is encouraged to ensure valuable experience and knowledge are exchanged between local and international students. Study support groups are also formed for class presentations.

Graduate opportunities

The Graduate Diploma in International Public Health will lead to hands on careers in public health, i.e. working with people in the field, as well as research-oriented jobs which involve conducting studies and examining overall health trends. Careers in public health include public health officer in a health service, public health advisor to an international aid agency or government department in a developing country, or a researcher at a university or research centre.

Graduates of the Graduate Diploma in International Public Health are able to obtain employment with non-government organisations (NGO’s) internationally and in Australia, government ministries in developing countries, multilateral and bilateral agencies (such as AusAID , the United Nations or the World Health Organization), Australian health services and academic institutions.

Admission requirements

A successful applicant for admission to the Graduate Diploma in the International Public Health will hold a bachelor’s degree from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification. In exceptional circumstances the dean may admit applicants without this qualification who, in the opinion of the school, have qualifications and evidence of experience and achievement sufficient to successfully undertake the award.

How to apply

Applications are made directly to the University and assessed by the Faculty. On-time applications for the March Semester close on 31 January. On-time applications for the July Semester close on the 30 April. Please note that late applications will be considered.

International students

Postgraduate Domestic Tuition Fee

This 2013, tuition fee for a domestic postgraduate student represents the fee that is payable by you in the calendar year you commence your course, commencing in 2012 for a standard annual full time load of 48 credit points (1.0 EFTSL). If your study load is more or less than the 1.0 EFTSL your fee will differ.

Importantly, tuition fees are subject to annual review by the University, and are likely to increase each year of your period of study, effective at the start of each calendar year.

Additional incidental fees

For some courses there are incidental fees additional to the student contribution and/or course fee. Some of those fees are significant, for example, faculty-specific materials, tools, protected clothing and equipment. Please note that if you are classified by the University as a Research Training Scheme student in accordance with the Other Grants Guidelines (Research) 2010, you will be exempt from the payment of any SCA or tuition fees for courses undertaken as part of a Research Masters degree and Research Doctoral degree. In addition to the fees indicated here for the course of study, International Students studying on an Australian Student Visa must have appropriate health insurance for the duration of their studies on a Student Visa through an approved provider of the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) scheme. This is a requirement of the Australian Government, unless otherwise exempted by the Government.
