Graduate Certificate in Agriculture

The Graduate Certificate in Agriculture is focused on providing you with the knowhow and skills to address and create solutions for the most challenging issues of our time affecting agriculture and the management of our natural resources, such as food security, climate change, carbon, water and the environment.

The course considers these issues from the perspectives of science and economics, enabling students from different educational backgrounds to extend their knowledge and develop skills in a number of related disciplines and also to apply this learning in a curriculum that may include field trips, work experience and practical classes.

You will complete a total of 24 credit points (cp) made up of at least two units of study (12cp) in the areas of agricultural and resource economics, plant sciences, natural resources, or soil and water. Subject to meeting progression requirements in the Graduate Certificate, you may apply to transfer to the Master of Agriculture degree and undertake a major research project in your area of specialisation.

Study plan

Candidates for the Graduate Certificate in Agriculture complete 24 credit points (cp) made up of at least two core units of study (12cp) for a selected specialisation, and the balance from elective units of study offered by the faculty, subject to meeting prior learning requirements and timetabling. You may also choose to as part of your course. All research projects will commence in semester 1 unless exemption is approved by the dean.

Graduate opportunities

Opportunities for skilled graduates are growing in fields such as carbon and water trading, food futures, ecohydrology, and sustainability, complementing recent developments in catchment management, land rehabilitation and molecular science. Our graduates are employed in agribusiness and marketing firms, merchant banks, commodity trading companies, environmental consultancies, and scientific research organisations around the world, government departments and the private sector.

Admission requirements

A successful applicant for admission to the Graduate Certificate in Agriculture will hold a bachelor's degree or an equivalent qualification. In exceptional circumstances the dean may admit applicants without this qualification who, in the opinion of the faculty, have qualifications and evidence of experience and achievement sufficient to successfully undertake the award.

In addition to the fees indicated here for the course of study, International Students studying on an Australian Student Visa must have appropriate health insurance for the duration of their studies on a Student Visa through an approved provider of the Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) scheme. This is a requirement of the Australian Government, unless otherwise exempted by the Government.
