Master of Medicine (Reproductive Health Sciences and Human Genetics) and Master of Philosophy

The Master of Medicine (Reproductive Health Sciences and Human Genetics) and Master of Philosophy double degree is a coursework master’s degree combined with a master’s degree by research. You will enrol part-time in both coursework study and research study at the same time to complete this double degree as a full-time student over two years. The Master of Philosophy is completed under the guidance of a supervisor.

The double degree is available only to international students. Local students may enrol part-time in the two single degrees simultaneously, or they may enrol in the two degrees sequentially. In the latter instance, local students will complete both degrees part-time over four years.

Further course information

Study plan

Students complete coursework and clinical or laboratory assignments equivalent to 48 credit points plus a supervised research project leading to a master's thesis to qualify for the Master of Medicine (Reproductive Health and Human Genetics)/Master of Philosophy double degree. The coursework and clinical or laboratory assignments are undertaken over two years. Students are required to attend lectures and tutorials and undertake field visits to laboratory and clinical areas. Lectures and tutorials are held on two evenings per week and some Saturdays. Assessment is by written examination, oral presentations, written assignments and placement reports. International students will complete the research project and submit the master's thesis during the same period.

Progression rules

Students will undertake the coursework study concurrently with the research component of this double degree.

Course outcomes and further study

Graduate opportunities

The course aims to improve students' knowledge of recent developments in reproductive health sciences, reproductive medicine and human genetics and to help them to acquire new skills for clinical practice, further their education in research methodology and in critical appraisal of relevant literature. This course prepares students for higher level managerial roles and provides research training to undertake a doctoral degree.

Course accreditation

Completed units of study may count towards points in the continuing professional development program of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

Further study

Outstanding graduates may be eligible to pursue a higher degree by research in the courses of Doctor of Philosophy, Master of Philosophy and Master of Surgery (by research) offered by Sydney Medical School. A research degree provides students with the opportunity to prepare a substantial piece of work which represents a significant contribution in a particular field of study; and to gain transferable skills in general research methodology.

Admission requirements

This double degree is only available to international students and places will be offered to qualified applicants according to the following admissions criteria. In exceptional circumstances the dean may admit applicants without these qualifications who, in the opinion of the school, have qualifications and evidence of experience and achievement sufficient to successfully undertake the award.

Local applicants should apply for admission to KC077 Master of Medicine (Reproductive Health Sciences and Human Genetics) and KC083 Master of Philosophy.

A successful applicant for admission to the Master of Medicine (Reproductive Health Sciences and Human Genetics)/Master of Philosophy will:
(a) submit a research proposal outlining the objectives of their research project; and
(b) provide evidence of contact with a registered supervisor at Sydney Medical School willing to support their research; and
(c) hold the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Sydney or equivalent qualification.
