Bachelor of Science and Master of Nutrition and Dietetics

The information on this page applies to future students. Current students should refer to their faculty handbooks for course information.

The Bachelor of Science and Master of Nutrition and Dietetics is a five-year combined course, designed for you to follow a career in nutrition and dietetics. The master's component has full accreditation from the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA).

This course is designed to give you a solid knowledge of nutritional science and nutrition as a scientific discipline, and to make you a scientist capable of working in and furthering this emerging field.

You start the course with the three-year Bachelor of Science and, as long as you meet the progression requirements, you then complete two years in the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics.

During the Bachelor of Science, you will complete units of study in biochemistry, molecular biology and human physiology, which are necessary prerequisites for accreditation by the DAA. You will also complete a major in one of the following areas: biochemistry, physiology, microbiology or psychology.

In the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics, your first year will consist of a series of lectures, tutorials and practical classes introducing you to nutritional science, clinical nutrition and dietetics, public health nutrition and more. In your second year, you will participate in clinical training, and complete a nutrition research project.

Upon graduation, you will be able to pursue a career as a dietician in a range of settings, a career in nutrition or other health related disciplines, and you might also wish to pursue a research career.

Please note that places in this course are limited and subject to strict enrolment quotas.

Further course information

Study plan

In the Bachelor of Science and Master of Nutrition and Dietetics you will commence your studies with the three-year BSc and progress to complete two years in the MNutrDiet. You will enrol in units of study to the value of 48 credit points in each year.

A SCIWAM (Science Weighted Average Mark based on results for your intermediate and senior units of study in science) of 65 or greater is necessary for progression to the MNutrDiet.

In the BSc you will complete units of study in biochemistry, molecular biology and human physiology which are necessary prerequisites for accreditation by the Dieticians Association of Australia (DAA). In the MNutrDiet you will engage in study in areas including nutritional science, food science, communication, and food service management. The final year of the MNutriDiet includes a clinical and community dietetics training placement, completing your requirements as an accredited dietician. You will also have the opportunity to complete a research project.

Progression rules

(1) Candidates must complete the requirements for the Bachelor of Science with a Weighted Average Mark of at least 65 in order to be eligible to proceed to the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics.

(2) Candidates who complete the requirements for the Bachelor of Science but fail to achieve a WAM of 65 will not progress to the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics and will be awarded the Bachelor of Science only.

What is a major?

In this combined course, you will be undertaking a major as part of the Bachelor of Science.

A major is a specialisation in a chosen area of study and is designed to develop your knowledge and skills in a particular area. Since you will be doing a major as part of a combined, specialised course, you will be required to undertake a major that is closely related to nutrition and dietetics. You can choose from the following majors: biochemistry, microbiology, physiology or psychology.

To complete a major, you need to undertake an approved combination of subjects (units of study). Normally, but not always, you need to undertake 24 credit points worth of senior units of study in a particular subject area, to complete a major.

What is an elective?

An elective is a unit of study (subject) which you are allowed to enrol in as part of your course and which will count towards the completion of your course. It differs to a core unit in that you have a choice about which electives, amongst a given set of electives, you want to study.

In this combined course, you have the opportunity to choose science electives during the Bachelor of Science component. You need to choose your electives carefully, to ensure that you meet the completion requirements of the course.

Course opportunities

The course includes opportunities to participate in the University's Study Abroad and Exchange Program, the Science Link-Up and Mentoring (SLAM) Program and the Science Talented Student Program (entry by invitation from the Dean of Science), and opportunities specific to majors or subject areas, such as the Year in Industry program offered by the School of Chemistry.

Course outcomes and further study

Graduate opportunities

Career opportunities include becoming a dietician in a hospital, work in the food industry, food provision, education and public relations. Other possibilities include a career in clinical nutrition, sports nutrition, community nutrition, public health or other health related disciplines and clinical studies. A research career and private practice are also possible.

Course accreditation

The Master of Nutrition and Dietetics is accredited by the Dietitians Association of Australia (DAA).

Further study

There are many opportunities for further study for graduates of this combined course. You may decide to take an honours year either after you have completed the Bachelor of Science component, or after you have completed the entire combined program. You might also wish to undertake additional postgraduate coursework studies in science to concentrate further on a major area of interest, or to diversify your studies.

The Master of Nutrition and Dietetics is considered a postgraduate course, so you will have a postgraduate qualification when you complete the combined program.

About honours

Honours is a widely recognised and highly regarded additional year of undergraduate study available to you either after you complete your Bachelor of Science, or after your complete the entire combined program. Honours a unique opportunity for you to explore your research potential and put the theory from your undergraduate studies into practice. An honours qualification is not only well regarded in academia, but also in industry where further, concentrated studies in a specialised area is highly sought after.

If you decide to take an honours year, you will likely do it in the area you majored in. Honours involves designing a research program in your chosen area of interest in consultation with one or more supervisors. Depending on the nature of your project you may also have to undertake some courses in experimental design or do some technical training to use a particular piece of equipment.

Other study options

It is possible for non-degree students to enrol in a unit of study (subject) offered in the Faculty of Science without being enrolled in an award course (degree). This provides a valuable opportunity for professionals to update their knowledge to enhance career pathways or for personal interest. Non-degree students pay full tuition fees, take the unit of study with award course students, and are assessed at the same level. Non-degree applicants meet the same prerequisites as students enrolled in an award course at the University of Sydney (or have completed equivalent units of study at another institution) to be able to enrol in any particular unit of study.

More information about non-degree study.

Units of study may also be undertaken cross-institutionally by students, subject to the approval of the Dean. Cross-institutional candidates are enrolled in an award course at another university and have approval from their home institution to complete a unit or units of study at Sydney, to be credited toward their degree.

More information about cross-institutional study.

Admission

Admission requirements

Admission to this course is on the basis of a secondary school leaving qualification such as the NSW Higher School Certificate (including national and international equivalents), tertiary study or an approved preparation program. English language requirements must be met (where these are not demonstrated) by sufficient qualifications taught in English. Special admission pathways are open for domestic mature aged applicants who do not possess a school leaving qualification, educationally disadvantaged applicants and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Applicants are ranked by merit and offers for available places are issued according to the ranking.

What if I don't get in? Are there other ways to study nutrition and dietetics?

If you're worried about your chances of gaining entry into this course, don't worry, you have other options for studying nutrition and dietetics. The Faculty of Science offers the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics as a standalone postgraduate course, which you can apply for after first completing an undergraduate course. In order to gain admission into a postgraduate course, you must first complete an undergraduate course, like the Bachelor of Science, and then apply for postgraduate study. You also need to satisfy certain admission requirements for the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics, like completing study in biochemistry and physiology in your undergraduate years.
