Financial Mathematics and Statistics

UNDERGRADUATE MAJOR

Financial mathematics and statistics is designed to meet the needs of a particularly popular area of employment for mathematics graduates. This major requires the completion of core units of study including specialist financial mathematics units as well as related units in mathematics and statistics. The expertise acquired is needed not only for the operation and analysis of investment portfolios, but also to establish, operate and maintain protocols for pricing traditional products like options and futures and modern products such as barriers, caps, swaps, exotics and other derivative securities.

Major outline

FIRST YEAR
You must study at least 12 credit points of junior mathematics, either at the normal or advanced level. It is recommended that you take MATH1001, MATH1002, MATH1003 and MATH1005 (or the advanced equivalent).

SECOND YEAR
You will take at least 18 credit points from mathematics and statistics units of study.

THIRD YEAR
You will take at least 24 credit points from senior financial mathematics and statistics units.

Further study for major

If you do well enough in your final year of undergraduate study, you may be eligible to complete honours in financial mathematics and statistics. In the honours year, you combine coursework with an individual research project on an interesting and challenging topic. You will work closely with a member of staff who is an expert in your chosen area of study, and they will be your project supervisor and mentor.
