UNDERGRADUATE MAJOR

A major in neuroscience is designed to provide you with a foundation in the basic biology of the brain and the fundamentals of cognition.

Throughout this major, you will focus your cross-disciplinary studies with a molecular, cellular, anatomical or behavioural concentration. You may choose to spread your studies across the whole range, or choose to concentrate on a particular approach at senior level.

Major outline

FIRST YEAR
To prepare for your major in neuroscience, it is recommended that in your first year you take 12 credit points of junior mathematics, and 24 credit points from biology, chemistry, computer science, physics, psychology and molecular biology.

SECOND YEAR
You will need to carefully select your units to fulfil the senior unit requirements of the major. You may choose intermediate units from the areas of anatomy, molecular biology, pharmacology, physiology and psychology.

THIRD YEAR
To successfully complete your neuroscience major, you must take at least 24 credit points of senior units from the neuroscience subject area. These must include units in two of the following areas: pharmacology, neuroscience and psychology.

A major in neuroscience will allow you to pursue further studies in neuroscience, work in one of the many rapidly growing areas in the pharmaceutical, medical or biotechnology industries, or pursue a professional course in medicine or psychology.

Further study for major

Eligible students who are interested in undertaking further studies in neuroscience have the opportunity to apply for admission to a BSc Honours year in neuroscience, and then a higher degree by research.

Research in neuroscience is vibrant and an international priority area. There are many opportunities for high-achieving students to undertake honours study within the field of neuroscience. Honours projects are typically undertaken within the respective schools and disciplines such as physiology, anatomy, pharmacology, psychology, pathology and associated institutes.
