Bachelor of Music Studies and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery
The information on this page applies to future students. Current students should refer to their faculty handbooks for course information.
Outstanding applicants will find that the combination of the Bachelor of Music Studies, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery provides a challenging and rewarding opportunity to pursue a unique course of study. You will select a principal study at the Conservatorium from the program in music studies in brass, composition, early music, classical voice, jazz voice, keyboard (piano), musicology, organ, percussion, strings, or woodwind. You will also complete core music units of study in music skills, music history and analysis, and performance. The Bachelor of Music Studies will be completed over six semesters with a credit average or above prior to your commencement in the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery. During this time, you will also complete one preparatory unit of study in medicine (zero credit point value) and three units of study in biology, physics and chemistry from the program offered by the Faculty of Science. Thereafter, you will study for the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery over four years.
Please note:
Sydney Medical School is proposing to change from awarding MBBS to MD or Doctor of Medicine. The change to MD has not yet been finalised - it requires approval from the University of Sydney Academic Board and from the Australian Medical Council. However, it is likely that students coming into the combined program in 2014 will undertake the MD once they have completed the initial Bachelor degree.
The primary change between the MD and MBBS programs will be the inclusion of compulsory research methods training and the completion of a research or other major project. Curriculum, clinical training and assessment will remain broadly the same. Central features of Sydney’s program, including the integration of clinical learning and teaching with basic sciences, population health concepts and the development of professionalism, will not be changed under the MD.
Information about the change will be posted as soon as it is available.

Study plan
The Bachelor of Music Studies and Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery is undertaken full-time over seven years. Students enrol in junior units of study with a maximum 48 credit points (cp) during first year. A typical unit of study has a value of 6cp. The course is structured to allow students flexibility in their choice of units so they may pursue their own combinations of musical and non-musical disciplines. Students may choose units of study taught at another Faculty of the University of Sydney up to a maximum of 28cp each year. Those units must include 18cp in designated Faculty of Science units of study. In addition, in the first three years of study, students complete one unit of study (zero cp) offered by the Faculty of Medicine. All students take a principal study in an instrument, voice, composition or musicology. There are four compulsory core studies in which students must complete a minimum number of credit points: principal study (36cp), history and analysis of music (24-30cp), music skills (24cp), performance (6-12cp), teaching music (3cp).
Progression rules
Under normal progression, a student shall undertake all units of study to the value of 24 credit points per semester as prescribed for the course. Students are required to attend all lectures, tutorials and performance-related activities prescribed for their units of study. In addition, students must complete the Bachelor of Music Studies in minimum time and maintain, as a minimum, a credit average in the Bachelor of Music Studies, this being the minimum level of academic performance required for admission to candidature for the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.
What is a major?
A major in the Bachelor of Music Studies is defined as a principal study. Students undertake a vocal, instrumental, composition or musicology principal study over six semesters. In addition, students complete core studies in aural perception and harmony and analysis, music history and analysis, composition or performance, and pedagogy.
What is an elective?
An elective is a unit of study within a degree, usually an option within a course. Electives allow more detailed study of a particular subject. Electives can be selected from the units of strudy offered by the Conservatorium or from other faculties within the university (subject to permission from the Conservatorium).
Course opportunities
Most subject areas within the Bachelor of Arts (Advanced) (Honours) allow for students to take part in an international exchange program . The program enables students to enhance their skills in a language other than English and their knowledge of other societies and cultures. Students in the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery have contact with patients and observe aspects of disease throughout their four years of study, with clinical placements at world-leading institutes, and established elective placement opportunities in Europe, Africa, North America and Asia.
Course outcomes and further study
Graduate opportunities
Graduates of the Bachelor of Music Studies and Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery will be broadly educated musicians who are able to apply their knowledge, skills and attitudes creatively and flexibly.
Course accreditation
A key focus of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music is its partnership programs with Australia's major music organisations, such as Opera Australia and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. Opera Australia: Opera Encounters allows selected students to work with principal artists and directors from Opera Australia and to benefit not only from the extensive knowledge which these professionals are able to share, but also to develop important contacts with key artists and administrators. In recent years, some of the Sydney Conservatorium's major opera productions have been developed as part of this program. An innovative new alliance has been forged, allowing for not only our Opera students to be coached, but to allow for outstanding students (vocal, instrumental and conductors) to perform in Opera Australia productions. Sydney Symphony Orchestra: A project jointly developed by the Conservatorium and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra is the Sydney Symphony Sinfonia. Students audition to join members of the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in a series of performances and regional tours. The success of this partnership can be measured through the level of success of Conservatorium students in securing casual and permanent employment in the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and other professional orchestras.
Further study
The Sydney Conservatorium of Music has a vibrant and diverse community of staff and students, many of whom enjoy exceptional careers worldwide as both performers and scholars in the finest musical company. The Conservatorium places a high emphasis on its research activity and is recognised as a gathering place for experiencing music performance, scholarship and culture by individuals who push the boundaries of innovation, creativity, cognition and expression. Eligible candidates may proceed to an additional Honours year in the Bachelor of Music Studies and Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (Music). Candidates must have qualified for the award of their pass degree and will have met the required credit point average. The BMusStud also provides for admission to a range of Sydney postgraduate and graduate entry coursework programs.
