Curriculum in Early Childhood (EDEC4002)
UNIT OF STUDY
This unit is designed to enable students to develop the knowledge and skills to plan and implement curricula for infants, toddlers, young children and their families in early childhood settings. Curriculum in early childhood is developed following observation and assessment of the strengths and interests of children, and in consultation with families, and is shaped with consideration of national early childhood quality assurance and regulatory requirements, nationally mandated learning outcomes for young children, relevant research, educator's perspectives on early learning, early childhood centre's philosophies and the specific characteristics of the community contexts within which early childhood services operate. The design and development of flexible, effective programs and planning approaches are fundamental to the creation of quality early childhood environments. This unit will provide students with opportunities to investigate a variety of curriculum models and planning processes that inform effective learning programs for children. These include documenting children¿s learning, understanding the phases of effective planning in high quality early childhood settings, and critically examining the current research, togethr with community and early childhood attitudes towards early childhood curriculum practices.
