This unit of study provides an introduction to issues of teaching, learning and development, within the social and institutional contexts of early childhood education. It examines children's learning and development as a complex and dynamic process with its substrate in the developing brain. An introduction to major learning approaches in early childhood education and care is also provided. The teaching of this unit is supported by carefully selected videos that assist students in understanding the key issues and in appreciating and preparing for the many challenges of early childhood settings and early childhood teaching as a profession.
