Schools and their Communities

EDMT6500

This unit investigates the complex and changing nature of school communities. It critically examines the social contexts of schooling and the complex relationships between families and schools and encourages pre-service teachers to consider themselves as part of a professional community. Weekly lectures and seminars address key topics related to the social and community contexts of schooling, the development of professional portfolios and the principles of practitioner research. The seminars are organised around discussions and activities, grounded in the required readings and in keeping up to date with current debates about education. The student-organised field trip is designed to encourage students to spend at least threehours exploring an educational community.
