TESOL as a Third Teaching Area (EDSE5011)

UNIT OF STUDY

Twenty five percent of students in NSW come from bilingual/ bicultural backgrounds and many need support in the development of English. This unit gives a background in and qualifies participants for teaching English to young people and adults both in Australia and overseas. The unit explores second language development, the systems of English language and teaching approaches, especially to the teaching of academic English. This unit aims to develop participants' professional understanding and expertise as TESOL educators.

2x4-hr seminars/wk for 7wks and 1x4-hr seminar in wk 8

Assessment

3000wd take-home grammar test and language analysis (30%) and 2000wd reporting involving analysis and teaching of pronunciation (20%) and 1000wd reflective report on topic related to second language teaching and learning (10%) and 4000wd portfolio of teaching and learning materials with lesson plans (40%)

Prerequisites and assumed knowledge

192 credit points including 24 credit points from one of (English, linguistics, or one of the foreign languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Modern Greek, Sanskrit, Spanish))
