China's Traumas,1937-1971

HSTY2623

Invasion, atrocity, and occupation by Japan (1937-45); the Civil War (1946-49); the Great Leap Forward into famine (1958-61); the Cultural Revolution's deadly first six years (1966-71): four horrors whose effects were felt for decades. Most textbooks draw a line in 1949 between each pair of episodes; this unit asks what we can learn by exploring all four in sequence. It draws on insightful new historiography to seek a deepened understanding of contemporary China's recent past.
