Students will be introduced to primary care clinical practice and the management and treatment of patients with dental caries using non-invasive primary and secondary preventive strategies and the application of appropriate behavioural skills, in particular, motivational interviewing techniques. Within the context of clinical practice, students will experience working as members of a team and learn how team management is critical to achieving desired health outcomes both effectively and efficiently. This unit will build on Year 1 and further develop an understanding of anxiety, pain, phobias, anger and stress. Population Oral Health will be developed with topics such as the utilisation of dental services; health education; health promotion; oral care for prisoners; refugee services; community aspects of dental fluorosis; community aspects of dental trauma; the special needs patient; monitoring clinical services; and the limitations of western dentistry.
