This unit builds on the fundamental concepts and procedures covered in year 1 to provide the important clinical procedures involved in denture construction prior to commencing clinical management of patients requiring simple partial dentures. Clinical management will advisedly emphasise preparation of the mouth (in particular oral health care to address dental caries, gingivitis and periodontal disease) before rehabilitation as fundamental to oral health management. The indications and contraindications for implants will be covered in this block as well as the basic technical and theoretical procedures involved in planning treatment with implants and the importance of the occlusion in prosthodontic reconstructions. This unit also provides students with more advanced information on the range of periodontal diseases and the fundamentals of diagnosis and management of periodontal disease. The complexity of factors in the management of aged patients and patients with disabilities will also be covered in more detail.
