From Argentine to Latin American Icons (SPAN3623)

This unit (taught in Spanish) explores the images associated with figures such as Eva Perón, Ernesto Che Guevara, and cultural phenomenon such as "fútbol", tango and the landscape of Patagonia. We will focus on the way in which different cultural elements frequently perceived as part of Argentina's cultural history have been created, appropriated and commodified within and beyond the country's national boundaries. We will give special attention to globalisation and transnationality as frameworks for approaching the relationship between culture and commodification.
