Sydney is a vibrant city and there are many suburbs surrounding the main campus that are lovely to live in. You can choose to reside in a homestay for a short period and move on to independent renting or you may prefer one of the many privately owned student residences such as UniLodge (Broadway). There are plenty of options, so make sure you thoroughly research your options before committing yourself.
The University also has an Accommodation Database with listings of private accommodation available for student rental. You can search the database for available listings and make contact directly with the landlord.
The database is only available to currently enrolled students. This information is provided only as a service to assist students; these are not University-owned or managed accommodation
There are plenty of resources available to ensure that you are equipped with information on the procedures involved with the rental market. Redfern Legal Centre has a Survival Guide that provides resources on share-housing and legalities regarding rights and responsibilities. Tenants NSW has several factsheets that detail the current tenancy law and information regarding rents, bonds and privacy.
Remember, it may take several weeks, especially during the start of each semester, to find an ideal place to live – do not leave house hunting to the last minute!
The suburbs surrounding the Camperdown/Darlington Campus include:
- Forest Lodge
St Peters, Petersham, Erskinville, Marrickville and Leichhardt are also near the Camperdown/Darlington Campus but will require a short bus ride or bike ride.
Most of these locations are also convenient for the Sydney College of the Arts at Rozelle, but if you want to live closer you may want to look at Balmain and Rozelle.
The suburbs close to the Cumberland Campus are Lidcombe, Aurburn, Regents Park, Chullora, Homebush (near the site of Sydney's Olympic Park). Also fairly close are the larger centres of Strathfield and Parramatta
