General information

Who can apply?

  • All colleges and residences accept applications from Australian and international undergraduate and postgraduate students.
  • Special criteria apply for University owned accommodation managed by the Student Housing Unit .
  • Australian students on a low income can apply for University owned low cost accommodation and for STUCCO housing cooperative.

When should I apply?

  • Apply as early as possible, generally around the time you apply to UAC or the University.
  • Some colleges and residences have closing dates for applications. See their websites for details using the links below.
  • Be aware that places are limited and in high demand, and the application process can be competitive at some residential colleges.
  • Some colleges will accept late applications, and applications for commencement in semester 2. See individual websites for details.

How do I apply?

  • There is no centralised application process for on-campus accommodation.
  • Submit individual applications for each college and residence.
  • Go to their websites (links below) to submit an online application, or to download an application form.

Do I need to pay an application fee?

  • All residences, apart from the University owned accommodation and STUCCO, charge a non-refundable application fee, which is detailed on their websites.

How many residences can I apply for?

  • You can apply to as many colleges and residences as you want.

What type of contracts are offered?

  • Colleges and residences offer their own residential or licence agreements. These are legally binding documents setting out the conditions and obligations attached to residence.

Can I live on-campus for just one semester?

  • Some colleges and residences offer single semester contracts, others for the whole academic year, from early March to late November. Sydney University Village and the self-contained apartments at International House offer 12 month contracts.
  • Download Find a Place to Live for information about length of contracts offered by each residence.
  • When they have vacancies, most colleges and residences will offer single semester, or shorter contracts. Contact them for advice.

How long can I live on-campus?

  • The University owned properties, Darlington House and the University Terraced Housing generally only accommodate students for a single academic year. Generally (but not always) students are allowed to remain in residence until just prior to the commencement of the following academic year.
  • Sydney University Village gives students the option of remaining in residence for the following year.
  • The residential colleges welcome returning students.
  • Some residential colleges offer students the option of moving out for the mid year holiday (fees are not charged for this period), but generally, all colleges offer students the option to remain in residence during mid-year and end-of-year holidays.

Because they are all within walking distance or easy public transport access, students at Sydney College of the Arts, Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Mallett Street, Burren Street, and Surry Hills campuses live on-campus at Camperdown and Darlington campuses.

University owned accommodation

The University owns catered and self-catered, fully furnished accommodation on or near the following campuses:

Camperdown and Darlington campuses

  • International House is the only University owned residential college. It offers both catered and self-catered options. The catered accommodation consists of single and twin-share study-bedrooms and ensuite or communal bathrooms in a college-style environment. Self-catered accommodation is provided in 15 fully furnished, self-contained studio, 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom apartments.
  • The Student Housing Unit manage Darlington House, the Terraced Housing and Selle House. Please read their advice regarding application criteria, noting that if you are a first year undergraduate student student aged 17 to 19 years, from overseas, interstate and intrastate, you are encouraged to apply for this accommodation.
  • Darlington House accommodates 54 students in 12 male-only or female-only self-contained apartments in a modern apartment building.
  • The Terraced Housing consists of single and twin-shared bedrooms in 43 terraced houses located near the University.
  • Low cost accommodation, subsidised by the University, is offered in Selle House and several terraced houses. This accommodation caters to students on a very low budget. You will only be eligible if you are an Australian Citizen or a Resident and receive a Centrelink benefit.

Cumberland Campus

  • Yannadah at Cumberland Campus offers catered accommodation for 39 Health Science students.

Camden Campus

  • Nepean Lodge is a modern complex of 2, 3 & 6 bedroom, self-contained units. This accommodation is suitable for families or share accommodation.
  • Nepean Hall offers 42 single study bedrooms with shared bathrooms, kitchens and recreational rooms.

The Residential colleges

Important Note
The residential colleges are accepting applications for Semester 1, 2012.

Apart from International House, all the colleges are affiliated with, but not owned by the University. Each one is run independently. They provide furnished rooms and all meals.

They fill up early and you generally will need to apply well before the beginning of the academic year. Sometime places become available for Semester 2.

Sydney University Village

Sydney University Village offers self-catering apartments to enrolled students. You can apply for studio, two, four and five bedroom apartments.

The Village has some retail facilities, a food court, a bar and meeting rooms.

You need to apply as early as possible, as it fills up very quickly.

STUCCO student cooperative living

Located in Newtown, about ten minutes walk from the University, STUCCO is a housing co-operative for full-time, low income students who are Australian residents. Affiliated with, but not owned by the University, it accommodates 38 students in 8 apartments. Students are required to attend meetings and assist with the running of the co-operative.

Off-campus accommodation
