Faculty, School and Student Welcome Events

The faculty and school welcome events are essential to your orientation experience. They are friendly, practical sessions that introduce you to the teachers and staff you will be in regular contact with, and provide important information related to your course.

You’ll learn about your faculty’s facilities, administrative procedures and receive advice to help you prepare for the year ahead. It's also a great opportunity to meet your peers and find out about student and professional associations related to your study. If you are studying with more than one faculty, we encourage you to attend all welcomes relevant to your degree.

Undergraduate welcome for new students: Loving the Humanities and Social Sciences - an introductory symposium. Around 385BCE the Greek philosopher Plato recorded a discussion that took place in Athens amongst friends on what was the true nature of love. Each of the speakers on the night presented wildly different views of love based on their own experiences of life.

As one of the most famous texts in Western Civilization, we thought we would let it inspire us in order to present a fun and fascinating introduction into the work of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. In this lively debate, some of the most dynamic academics at Sydney will present their wildly different views on love, and they will do so through the prism of their own academic specialties. You will not only get to hear about some incredible ideas – but also see how various disciplines work and how they might approach a phenomenon as nebulous, awe-inspiring and life changing as love.
