International student orientation

Welcome to the University of Sydney and Australia!

We offer several programs to newly arriving international students that will help you adjust and make a smooth transition to your new environment. During these sessions, you will meet our staff and other students, enjoy social activities, and have the opportunity to ask questions about the University or life in Sydney. We recommend different sessions, depending on your type of study.

Study abroad and exchange students study at the University of Sydney for six or twelve months, and take their academic credit back to their home universities. If you are one of these students, you will need to attend the following:

  1. A Meet and Greet Session held during Monday 17 to Friday 20 February (You only need to attend one Meet and Greet Session)
  2. Your welcome, orientation and enrolment on Monday 24 February
  3. The activities arranged by Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness (SUSF) and the University of Sydney Union (USU) on Tuesday 25 February.


International full degree students will complete either an undergraduate or postgraduate degree program, and will need to attend:

  1. Your undergraduate or postgraduate full-degree welcome in the morning on Tuesday 25 February
  2. An arrival information session
  3. Your faculty and/or school welcome
  4. The activities arranged by SUSF and the USU on Tuesday 25 February in the afternoon.
  5. The postgraduate welcome and orientation on Monday 3 March.

Study Abroad and Exchange (STABEX) students

International Services acts as your home base for the duration of your study. Please come along to the three sessions below to enrol and familiarise yourself with the University of Sydney.

Welcome

When: Monday 24 February, 10am–12.30pm
Where: The Great Hall, Quadrangle

The welcome will be followed by light refreshments and your orientation and enrolment in Eastern Avenue Auditorium, Eastern Avenue Auditorium and Theatre Complex.

Social Activities

Sydney Uni Sport & Fitness (SUSF) BBQ Lunch and Sports games

STABEX students are invited to join the SUSF BBQ lunch and sports games on Tuesday 25 February at 11am. This event will be held at The Square (behind the Education Building) on Physics Road.

University of Sydney Union (USU) Activities

International full-degree students

The international full degree student welcomes officially introduce new students to the University of Sydney community. The program will welcome you to Australia and the University, help to familiarise you with life in Sydney, and provide an opportunity for you to get to know other students.

You should attend the session below that corresponds with your degree, as well as your faculty or school welcome later in the week.

Undergraduate students

When: Tuesday 25 February, 9am–1pm
Where: The Great Hall, Quadrangle

The welcome will be followed by morning tea in the cloisters, and then SUSF will be providing a BBQ lunch and sports games on the Square.

Postgraduate students

When: Tuesday 25 February, 10am–1pm
Where: The Great Hall, Quadrangle

Morning tea will be served in the cloisters and your welcome will begin at 11am. Afterwards, you are invited to join the undergraduate and STABEX students on the Square for sports games and a BBQ lunch provided by SUSF.


International Student Arrival Information Sessions

These sessions will provide you with practical information to help you get settled in Sydney, and ensure your first few weeks run as smoothly as possible. Staff and students will present information and give you key resources about studying at the University and life in Sydney.

Bring along any questions you might have and you only need to attend one of these sessions.

  2. When: Thursday 20 February, 9am–11am
    Where: Theatre 157, Carslaw Building, Eastern Ave
  3. When: Friday 28 February, 9am–11am
    Where: Lecture Theatre, Eastern Avenue Auditorium and Theatre Complex, Eastern Ave

After each of these sessions, you are invited to join the University of Sydney Union (USU) for a free campus tour leaving outside the venues at 11.15am.

USU Activities

The USU organises a range of activities for International students during O-Week to introduce you to the University of Sydney community. They also provide an International Student Lounge with free computer access, pool tables, locker hire and staff to assist you.

We encourage you to visit the lounge and join in the activities below.

Campus Tours

We will run free one-hour campus tours at 11.15am after each of the arrival information sessions, departing from outside the venues.

Sydney day trips

When: Tuesday 25 February, 1pm
Where: Meet at the International Student Lounge, Level 4, Wentworth Building
Details: You must register for these trips, costs of travel from the university only will be covered – you will have to pay for the ferry to Manly.

Welcome to Sydney! Let us help you get to know some of Sydney’s most famous attractions. You can choose from one of the following sights: Manly, Darling Harbour, or the Rocks. All tours will take about 4 hours. Your guides will be fellow students who will be able to answer questions, point out highlights and translate any Aussie slang that befuddles your brain.

We realise that you are all adults, so we’re not going to be holding your hand all day! You should feel free to explore and make your own way back to campus or home. However, our guides will also determine a meeting time for the trip back to University.

Please note that whilst these tours are guided they are not supervised. Participants are responsible for their own safety.

You must be at the International Student Lounge, Level 4, Wentworth Building by 1pm Tuesday 25 February – don't forget to wear comfortable clothes, bring lots of water, and be ready to meet lots of new people.

Welcome to Sydney Party

When: Tuesday 25 February, 7pm
Where: Manning Bar, Manning Road, Camperdown Campus

Do not miss out on the Welcome to Sydney Party! It will be a fun night with FREE food, one free drink for Access Members and great prizes to give away. This is a great opportunity for you to meet new friends before the semester starts so come along and have a great night!
