Graduating from the University of Sydney
Graduation invitations
Three weeks prior to each scheduled ceremony, graduands are sent a Graduation Invitation Package, consisting of:
- An invitation with two or three guest tickets
- The Information for Graduands booklet
You can download the Information for Graduands booklet (PDF).
There is also a detailed description of the University's academic dress requirements for each degree and diploma.
The Graduation Invitation Package will be sent to your correspondence address (i.e. the address to which your examination result notices have been sent), three weeks prior to the ceremony. Note that it is your responsibility to ensure that the University has your correct address. You can review your address through MyUni.
All ceremonies will be held in the Great Hall at the Main Quadrangle of the University. Ceremonies last for approximately one hour.
NB: It is not possible to change the date of your graduation ceremony.
Graduating in absentia
If you have been assigned to a ceremony and you do not attend, you will automatically graduate in absentia and your testamur and academic record will be mailed to your last known correspondence address. If you do not wish to attend a ceremony you may have your degree conferred earlier, at a monthly meeting of the University Senate. For this to happen you must advise the Graduations Office in writing by:
- email:
- fax: +61 2 8627 8281
- post:
Graduations Office
Level 3, Jane Foss Russell Bldg, G02
University of Sydney, NSW, 2006.
You must state that you wish to graduate in absentia and include your full name, student number and the address to which your testamur and academic transcripts are to be posted.
NB: You cannot graduate in absentia and subsequently attend a graduation ceremony in Sydney.
Graduation-day parking
Limited free parking is available for graduands and their guests on graduation ceremony days. Vehicles are not required to display a parking voucher or ticket in the Shepherd Street car park..
This arrangement is valid only at the Shepherd Street car park. At other places on campus and on non-ceremony days any vehicles not displaying a current parking permit or paid parking ticket will be fined.
A free shuttle bus service will be provided to transfer graduands and their guests from the Shepherd Street car park to the main campus on graduation days. The bus service will run on a continuous loop every 15 minutes commencing at 8.00am and concluding at 6.00pm.
Everyone using University car parks is encouraged to consider the high levels of routine demand on campus when deciding whether to use their private vehicle. Alternative transport options, including trains, buses, taxis and car pooling may be just as effective. Please note that there is no guarantee a parking space will be available.
The University is well serviced by public transport options that may provide better alternatives to driving and finding a car park. Consideration of times of travel and other variables may also offer alternatives to individuals in finding parking. Alternatively, user pays parking exists in local streets and commercial car parks if University parking resources are completely exhausted.
Graduation photographs
Memento Photography has been contracted by the University to provide official graduation photographs. A brochure from Memento Photography will be included in the Graduation Invitation Package. Alternatively you may visit the Memento Photography website for further information.
Graduation DVDs and plaques
DVDs of your graduation ceremony and wall-mountable plaque reproductions of your testamur can be ordered on-line from Ambassador Productions or from the Ambassador Productions outlet in the Quadrangle immediately after your ceremony.
Graduands discontinuing
If you are enrolled in an honours year and discontinue and wish to graduate with the pass degree, you must notify your faculty Office in writing.
Please ensure that the University has your correct correspondence address.
