Associate Professor Ayman Ellakwa
Head of Prosthodontics ( Fixed &
Removable Prosthodontics, Occlusion, and Oral Implants)
Since my arrival in Sydney in 2007, I have been leading administrative and academic positions within the University of Sydney, Dental school, which has allowed me to be involved in the students’ life throughout a variety of aspects. I worked as BDent 3 Subdean for five years mainly engaged in managing student academic life within the faculty of dentistry. Then after that, I was appointed by Professor Chris Peck as BDent 3 and 4 Subdean for another four years. Later with the start of the DMD program, I became the DMD4 academic year coordinator, and I continued my involvement with dental students to make sure their educational goals have achieved. I have extensive experience in dealing with and facilitating the daily academic life of dental students during their clinical course, which can be difficult at certain times.
Professor Ellakwa worked with a team of academics within the faculty of dentistry to modify the dental curriculum and change the program from BDent to DMD program.
Professor Ellakwa introduced CAD/CAM technology into the dental curriculum and allowed dental students to treat their patient for the first time in Australia using digital dentures. Professor Ellakwa trained dental students who are leading the profession now in Sydney and overseas.
Professor Ellakwa was promoted to Professor in 2014 by the Egyptian higher research committee. Professor Ellakwa started his career at The University of Sydney as a lecturer in 2007 then he was successfully promoted two times through a rigorous and transparent promotion process. He holds associate professor position since 2014.
Professor Ellakwa main interest is the quality of dental clinical training of Sydney dental school graduates. He has extensive teaching experience within clinical restorative dentistry and prosthodontics.
Professor Ellakwa is responsible for the Prosthodontics clinical training of students in the final two years of the graduate Doctor of Dental Medicine program (DMD).
Prof Ellakwa gained his Master's degree in the area of prosthodontics followed by a Ph.D. (2001) investigating the clinical potential of fiber-reinforced dental composite resin in restorative dentistry. He did his clinical and research training at the school of dentistry Birmingham University, UK.
His Ph.D. conducted at Birmingham University, the UK in 2001.
Ayman received the Fellowship in the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons by examination in 2010 then nominated to the International Fellowship of Dentist in 2014. He has published 50 papers and has presented lectures to the profession covering a range of topics related to restorative dentistry.
Besides, he is working as a reviewer for dental materials and the Journal of American Dental Association.
He is actively collaborating with different universities in Japan, South Korea, and Brazil. Professor Ellakwa works as a consultant and a key opinion leader for several dental companies in Australia and Overseas.

Assessing the polymerization shrinkage generated after incremental dental composite placement versus bulk composite filling.
Using acoustic emission technique in assessing the stresses generated within the tooth after dental composite placement and curing.
Development of new short fiber reinforced dental composite.
The use of CAD/CAM technology with the construction of complete and partial dentures.
The accuracy of new digital intraoral impression techniques in restorative dentistry.
Assessing the crack propagation within the new full zirconia dental crowns.
I have more than 20 years experience in Academic prosthodontics and I worked in different parts of the world.I got extensive experience at the University of Sydney in teaching, research and leadership.
My teaching philosophy centers on research-led and research-enhanced teaching to achieve genuine understanding and spark students’ interest in general dentistry, prosthodontics, and dental materials.
I am interested in teaching and training my dental students and CAD/CAM technology and its use in prosthodontics.
I am also introducing dental implants teaching into the curriculum and I would like my students to be trained to restore dental implants before their graduation.
