Greg Murray is Professor at the Faculty of Dentistry (based at the Centre for Oral Health, Westmead Hospital, Sydney) and Research Coordinator of the Jaw Function and Orofacial Pain Research Unit. He is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons. Professor Murray’s research focuses on the biomechanics of normal jaw movement and jaw dysfunction, and the effect of pain on jaw muscle activity. His interest in the field commenced during his MDS with Professor Iven Klineberg and later during his PhD in Canada with Professor Barry Sessle, where he studied cerebral cortical control of orofacial movements. The PhD work demonstrated the involvement of the somatosensory cortex and motor cortex in controlling normal functioning of the jaw. Since returning to the University of Sydney he has studied the neurophysiological aspects of somatosensory sensation. He has, in collaboration with Professor Chris Peck, developed a new model to explain the effects of orofacial pain on jaw muscle activity as studies have highlighted the inadequacy of older pain theories, which do not account for the impact of psychosocial factors such as catastrophising, depression, anxiety, or stress on pain perception. Professor Murray was part of the expert panel of the International RDC/TMD Consortium and Orofacial Pain Special Interest Group, which developed and published its 2014 ‘Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (DC/TMD) for Clinical and Research Applications’.He is a member of the Pierre Fauchard Academy and a fellow of the International College of Dentists. Heis past President of the International Association for Dental Research Neuroscience Group and past secretary of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Orofacial Pain. He is Associate Editor of Archives of Oral Biologyand of the Journal of Oral & Facial Pain and Headache.

Research interests

Professor Murray guides a small group of Master’s and PhD degree students who conduct research on orofacial motor control and orofacial pain. One set of projects involves studies of jaw muscle electromyographic (EMG) activity in relation to normal jaw movement in human subjects. Using fine-wire electrodes he has recorded data on the EMG activity of hard-to-access deeper jaw muscles (including the lateral pterygoid muscle). The team is now investigating the largely-unstudied medial pterygoid muscle in relation to normal jaw movement, with preliminary data indicating this may be an important and much-used muscle in movements beyond clenching of the jaw, including for speech and fine movement. Recently studies have investigated the effects of resistance exercises of the jaw on jaw muscle coordination.

Other projects study the effect of orofacial pain on jaw movement, including using an experimental pain model to determine the effect of psychological factors such as catastrophising on the relationship between orofacial pain and jaw function. These studies have shown that catastrophising influences orofacial pain perception and the resultant motor activity of the jaw.

Professor Murray collaborates with Associate Professor Luke Hendersen (Anatomy & Histology) who is studying brain activity in orofacial pain and jaw muscle interactions, including comparative studies mapping brain activity in differing orofacial pain syndromes such as Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD) vs neuropathic pain. He is an author on a recent (2014) study, driven by Associate Professor Luke Hendersen and published in the journal Pain,that hasdemonstrated differential brain activity in subjects with painful trigeminal neuropathy vs those with TMD.
