Biographical details

Iven Klineberg graduated from the University of Sydney in dentistry and science (BDS, BSc), and clinical training in prosthodontics (MDS, 1966).

Gained his PhD in the University of London (1971) at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, Department of Applied Physiology; and Fellowship in Dental Surgery (FDSRCS); was awarded an Honorary Fellowship from the Royal College of SurgeonsEdinburgh (2002).

He was Visiting Associate Professor in the Department of Occlusion, University of Michigan (1977-8), and appointed Professor and Head of Prosthodontics, University of Sydney (1979-2006 and from 2013), Nobel Biocare Chair of Oral Rehabilitation (2007-2012), Professor of Prosthodontics (from 2012).

Appointed Dean, Faculty of Dentistry, University of Sydney (1991-1998 and 2003-2004).

Awarded Membership in the Order of Australia (1996).

Co-ordinator of the specialty program in prosthodontics since 1980 – MDSc and DClin Dent.

Co-ordinator of the Grad Dipl Clin Dent (oral implants) since 1994

Established an Orofacial Pain Clinic (1980) at the Sydney Dental Hospital and Westmead Centre for Oral Health (1986) for management of patients with temporomandibular disorders and orofacial pain; which also provided a forum for clinical training for postgraduate students.

Established an Implant Centre linked with the Sydney Dental Hospital as an interdisciplinary initiative with the Department of Oral Surgery (1982) and at Westmead Centre for Oral Health (1986). Postgraduate training, and continuing-education courses were presented from 1986 and introduced the Brånemark Implant System together with the Brånemark Centre in Perth.

Research interests

Occlusion and Orofacial Pain: Clinical Research Unit was established in 1980 - now the Jaw Function and Orofacial Pain Research Unit and linked with the Nobel Biocare Centre of Oral Rehabilitation. The unit supports studies on occlusion and temporomandibular joint function and dysfunction – including jaw muscle electromyography and jaw kinematics. International collaboration has been ongoing with Barry Sessle(Uni Toronto), Sandro Palla(Uni Zurich) and more recently Frauke Mueller(Uni Geneva). Graduate research students (M Phil, PhD) contribute to the research projects. International collaboration was established with ACTA (Amsterdam) for regular student placement for 3 or 4 month projects.

Oral Implants: The clinical use of oral implants were studied initially in collaboration with Tomas Albrektsson(Uni Gothenburg) and included guided bone augmentation and biomechanical considerations of linking osseointegrated implants and natural teeth.

Current implant studies include ultramicroscopy (PhD) and immunohistochemistry (BDent honours)of oral implant sites, optomising occlusal form with implant rehabilitation (PhD with Mike Swain) and recently bioscafold and PRF augmentation of bone healing. The latter are to be applied to management of Ectodermal Dysplasia with implants in growing bone; this follows an international DELPHI study which included Prof John Hobkirk(London), Dr Birgitta Bergindal(Sweden), Prof Marie Cecile Maniere(Uni Strasbourg), Prof Clark Stanford(Uni Iowa), Prof Arun Sharma(UCLA), A/Prof Albert Gukes(Uni North Carolina) .

Current projects

Oral implants: ultramicroscopy and immunohistochemistry of oral implant sites: bioscaffold (PhD – Shalinie King) and blood protein – PRF (DClin Dent – Zoe Potres) augmentation of bone healing, particularly related to bone volume augmentation for clinical management of young patients with Ectodermal Dysplasia; management of ED with implants in growing bone – international collaborative project including Prof John Hobkirk(London), Dr Birgitta Bergindal (Sweden).

Jaw function: Clinical EMG of a) superficial jaw muscles and bruxism (DClin Dent - David Go); b) medial pterygoid – a comprehensive anlaysis of functional activity (PhD - planned for Hui Chen).

Accurate transfer of clinical data in maxillofacial rehabilitation with orthodontics (MPhil – Mariana Culaciati).

Clinical study of neuroplasticity and cognition related to oral rehabilitation of the occlusion to optimize mastication (PhD – Chris Moule).

Associations

International College of Prosthodontists; Society of Oral Physiology, International Association for the Study of Pain, IADR Neuroscience Group.

Awards and honours

AM (1996) for services to dentistry,RFD (1994) for services to the military as RAAF consultant, Honorary member of the Faculty of Dentistry (2002), Honorary FDSRCS Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (2002) for services to dentistry.
