Biographical details

Dr Luiz E. Bertassoni received a DDS degree from Pontifical Catholic University in Brazil in 2007. During dental school, Luiz was a visiting researcher at the Division of Biomaterials and Bioengineering at University of California, San Francisco, for a period of 6 months. Soon after graduating from dental school Luiz became a post- doctoral researcher at the same division at UCSF, position that he held until the end of 2008. In 2009 Luiz was awarded two prestigious scholarships to undertake his PhD in Biomaterials at the University of Sydney, in Australia, which he completed in early 2012. After completing his PhD, Luiz held a joint faculty position at the Faculty of Dentistry, University of Sydney, and a postdoctoral appointment at Harvard – MIT’s Division of Health Sciences and Technology at Harvard Medical School, MIT and Brigham Women’s Hospital. His research has been funded by 7 research grants. Luiz is also a recipient of 13 national and international research awards, including the Collin Cormie Research Award, offered bi-annually to selected PhD students in Australia and the Joan Chong award in biomaterials, offered by ANZ/IADR to prominent early career researchers in the field. Currently Luiz serves as an ad-hoc reviewer or editorial board member for 20 scientific journals in biomaterials, bioengineering and dentistry.

Research interests

Dr Bertasssoni’s research interests are centered in tissue engineering, biomaterials and biomechanics. His current research addresses micro and nanoscale structural and property relationships in biomaterials and mineralized tissues; microfabrication and bioprinting technologies for tissue regeneration; and hydrogel-based microfluidics and organs-on-a-chip.
