Video and Media creators showcase

Monday 24 September 2018

These presentation sessions are aimed at academic and professional staff interested in the creative use of digital media to support learning, research, best practice and pedagogical approaches. The format consists of two 15 min presentations + Q&A for anything related to media production – DIY, branding, copyright, videoing, editing, e-publishing, screen casting, audio podcasting, augmented and virtual reality, drones, student generated content, software and more.

Presentation 1: Interview and filming preparation

Dr Yvette Debergue is the Educational Designer at Sydney Law School, working on the Canvas Transformation. She has previously worked at Sydney Nursing School in the areas of e-learning, academic integrity and assessment design. In her spare time, she teaches medieval history.

Yvette will showcase resources that were developed in response to a growing realisation that she, and many like her, were still on their L’s when it came to filming interviews or short pieces to camera. With some Education Compact funding, Yvette engaged the services of a multi-media journalist and an actor who created some instructional videos and help sheets for interview preparation. This is what we came up with.

Presentation 2: Introduction to using tablets and smart phones to record videos

Tom Cavdarovski is the Lead, Research and Learning Media Production from Educational Innovation. This hands-on technical session will introduce five tips on how to make the most of your video and audio recording. Tom will demonstrate utilising a tablet, but the principles covered can be applied to smart phones, webcams, camcorders and digital SLRs.

The introduction session will cover the following:

  1. Automatic and manual override function
  2. Available light and exposure
  3. Focusing
  4. Framing and the rule of thirds
  5. Audio

Attendees are asked to bring a phone or tablet as there will be a short group activity.

Open discussion 3: The last 20 mins will be an open discussion for attendees?

If you have any questions on video and media creation, someone in the room might have an answer. There is also an opportunity for volunteers to present at the next showcase or suggest topics for future presentations.
