Biographical details

Kathryn is Head of the Quality and Analytics (QA) Group within the newly restructured Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) Portfolio. The QA Group's work centres around the evaluation of learning and teaching, including surveys of the student experience, as well as academic and learning analytics.

She joined the Institute for Teaching and Learning (ITL) in mid 2008, and was a member of the academic staff team until the ITL closed at the end of August 2015. Her time in the ITL followed a two year education development post in the Faculty of Pharmacy. Her original academic appointment at the University of Sydney was in the Faculty of Agriculture where she was involved in teaching, consulting, and researching in applied statistics for seven years.

Research interests

Kathryn’s primary research interests lie in the field of educational psychology, including the following topics:

  • University student motivation – and relations with contextual factors and achievement
  • The epistemic stances (beliefs about knowledge and knowing) of academic staff – and the relationship between these beliefs and cultural variables such as gender, discipline, institution, seniority, ethnicity and religion.

She also has an emerging interest in learning analytics.

Teaching and supervision

Kathryn teaches in various professional learning opportunities offered by the Education Portfolio, in collaboration with members of the Educational Innovation group and other colleagues at the University.

Associations

Kathryn is a member of the European Association for Research on Learning & Instruction (EARLI) and related Metacognition, Motivation, and Higher Education SIGs; the Educational Division of the American Psychological Association (APA); the Society for Research into Higher Education (SRHE); and the Society for Learning Analytics Research (SoLAR). She served on the Executive Committee of the Higher Education Research & Development Society of Australasia (HERDSA) as Treasurer during 2007-2009.

Kathryn co-chairs the new Sydney Learning Analytics Research Group, is coordinator for the NSW Learning Analytics Working Group, and was the co-chair of the organising committee for ALASI 2015.
