Research interests

My research interests are in eLearning, particularly social networking in eLearning and visualization of curriculum information.

Thesis work

Thesis title: Social Networks in e-Learning Systems

Supervisors: Peter GOODYEAR , Rafael CALVO

Thesis abstract:

One of the most striking changes in the use of the internet over the last decade has been the emergence of Social Networking Sites, websites whose primary focus is social interaction.

This study is exploring the potential ramifications of that change by building social networking tools into an existing virtual learning environment, to see how this might enhance learning. The claim behind this study is that there are three main benefits to embedding a social network into a learning environment, as compared to using an external, public social network:
1. It creates a social space for learning - students already have access to online social spaces, but are not systematically using them for learning. This project will create an online social space that is focused on learning.
2. It creates a protected space - students are given a safe, learning-friendly area in which they can make mistakes, learn from, and share with each other, away from the eyes (and Google searches) of family, non-academic friends, and future employers.
3. It integrates the curriculum and social spaces - by providing social features throughout the online learning environment it is easy for students to use this tool to learn collaboratively.

Current projects

My PhD project will integrate social networking tools into an existing e-learning environment, blending them with the existing faculty-provided learning resources, to explore how students use them for learning, and to discover what kinds of online tools students find useful for their studies.
