Thesis title: The beliefs and practices of primary school teachers regarding the teaching of number using mathematics manipulatives

Thesis abstract:

This research aims to explore the self-reported beliefs of primary school teachers with regards to their use or non-use of mathematics manipulatives (concrete materials) when teaching primary students about number concepts or skills. This study explores teachers' diverse understandings of what manipulatives are and seeks to identity: who uses manipulatives the most, why they use them and how they use them. Variables which interact and influence the formation of teachers’ pedagogical beliefs regarding the use of manipulatives include: past schooling experience, teacher training, context and classroom practice.
