Professional Studies 1 (Options) (EDMT5601)
Unit of study outline
This unit focuses on providing a framework for understanding teaching in secondary schools. The lectures are an opportunity for secondary pre-service teachers to examine and discuss issues relevant to teaching in secondary schools. Issues of literacy and numeracy across the curriculum within a context of the developing and managing culturally inclusive classrooms and schools and the broader issue of teacher professionalism, popular cultural images of teachers and issues currently in the media will be examined. The unit aims to enhance the professional development of teachers in the context of their individual subject disciplines, across-the-curriculum government policies and issues, and the nature of the teacher as a professional and as a lifelong learner. Two assessment tasks must be completed by students undertaking the unit:
- Transition to Teacher Education – using one of the theoretical frameworks examined in lectures, students will critically reflect on their transition to teacher education.
- Me a Literacy Teacher! – since all teachers are teachers of literacy, students select a topic from one of their curriculum areas and examine literacy issues they anticipate having to address as they endeavour to teach this topic in secondary classrooms.
