Fields of practice – aged care

Social workers care for elderly people in a range of contexts, including hospitals, nursing homes and community centres. They help with assessments of what kind of care a person needs. Specialist work includes dementia care, bereavement issues and managing depression.

As clients age and their health declines, adversely affecting their independence and capacity to care for themselves, social workers take on greater roles in clients' families, helping the client as well as the principal carers adjust to their changing roles and circumstances.
