Fields of practice – income support

Income security is a large area of service provision, with the main government provider being Centrelink, a department that employs large numbers of social workers to assist people to access their entitlements and other support services.

People who are struggling on low incomes because they are elderly, unemployed or disabled are often in crisis and have difficulties securing accommodation and other basic human needs.

Social workers are employed by government and non-government agencies to provide services such as counselling, information support and referral in times of crisis. The work in this area consists of advocacy, referral, assessment and financial counselling.
