Candidates who wish to teach mathematics exclusively are able to specialise in this curriculum area; others can choose their second major from a wide range of physical sciences.

The two degrees are completed in five years but it is possible to exit the course at the end of Year 3 with a Bachelor of Science only. Students electing to exit early with a Bachelor of Science must provide notification in writing at the end of Year 2 and submit this notification separately to the Faculty of Science, and the Faculty of Education and Social Work.

Why study at the University of Sydney

A double degree in science and education from the University of Sydney provides students with a strong practical and theoretical preparation for teaching secondary school students and features units of study often found only in postgraduate programs. These include: special education, international education, education and ICT, and the professional knowledge of teaching. The program also has a fifth-year option that allows students to undertake a third teaching method in Teaching English as a Second Language; teaching English internationally; or cultural diversity.

Professional experience

School observation and practice teaching are major, integral components of the professional experiences in all education and teaching programs at the Faculty of Education and Social Work.

Practicums and internships – which are offered in partnership with participating schools – are designed to augment University coursework and provide student teachers with opportunities to develop their teaching skills and professional understanding. The combined degree program features 20 days' professional experience in Year 3; 25 days' in Year 4; and 30 days' in Year 5.
