Young People, Sex and Sexual Health (EDGU1004)

Ever wondered why so many people think about, speak about and learn about sex in so many different ways? Still not quite sure what all the letters in LGBTPPQQIIAA stand for or why it's really important to know them? So many people have had so much to say for so long about sex, sexuality, gender and sexual health – but how do you determine fact from fiction and, importantly, what does Miley Cyrus have to do with any of this? Wonder no more – in this unit you will learn why issues of sex, sexuality and sexual health for young people are considered 'difficult and contested knowledge' and how institutions go about dealing with this contest (in their own sweet but often out-of-date ways).

By looking at these issues from a range of historical, sociological, psychological, educational and public health perspectives, you will develop a new view of the ways in which the sexual identities of young people are often constructed from outside influences.
