Professional standards

The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) is the national body that has responsibility for the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers. These standards make explicit the levels of competency and excellence required of teachers at four different career levels including as a graduate teacher who has satisfactorily completed an initial teacher education degree. Use the link below to access complete information about the standards and other useful information.

The NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), which changed its name from the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards (BOSTES) on 1 January 2017, provides useful information, including its policy and commentary on teacher accreditation and standards. The NESA website was still under development in early 2017 but when completed and published will replicate this and other information of relevance:

The desired outcomes of every Education unit of study (UoS) must be linked to the standards. SUMO facilitates the cross-referencing of standards to UoS outcomes by offering a tick-box system for staff under the Attributes section of SUMO.
